    Garden hose.

If that reveals more gunk inside, Take the hottesst water your spigot can muster, fill a 5-gallon pail to about as much as it might take to fill the rad completely, mix one cup TSP to 4-gallons of the hottest water from your sink and pour it in.

Plug all openings and slosh around for 20 minutes.

Rinse with clean garden hose water and rinse until clear.

After the hernia surgery, go to the nearest supply house. You can buy these things for between a 100 and 200 bucks, brandy new.

BTW, if the "muck" is all laying in the bottom cavity/bore, it wouldn't hurt to run a stiff cleaning brush from end to end.
