heat shields

I need some information on heat shields, those devices used when doing a "staple-up."

I've done plenty of jobs without them and they seem to work fine. But one of my techs said he saw an article in PM that strongly advocates using them. Is there any design information available for "staple-up" installations and for heat shields?
