Built in 1928 by Pullman, 82 feet long, 375,000 pounds, sleeps 8, plus 2 crew. Full kitchen, dining room, open "back porch". Painted Pullman Green with gold lettering, black roof & underbody. Can't move an inch by herself, but a locomotive can take her up to 110. Pix at www.nyc-3.com

you guys too young to know cars. "56 Mercury was the car. Factory installed Tijuana tuck and rolled naugahyde; good size V-8 with 4-barrel; factory dual glass packs with darn little glass. Rumble down Main Street on Friday night. Back up to the drive in restaurant; rev that engine--enough roar to make the car-hop drop her tray and to bust a few windows to boot. Got my first traffic ticket in my brother's '56 Merc: Draggin' my cousin in his brother's 55 Olds. Neither of us ever told our brothers. The judge fined me a fortune, but what the hell: I won that race!

Something a bit different

In the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz was still importing cars that ordinary people could buy without breaking the bank. My grandmother had a '58 type 180a, with a small 4-banger and a 4-speed on the steering column. Doesn't sound like much, but it could cruise flat-out on the autobahn all day if you wanted it to. I learned how to drive a stick-shift on that car. And in the little town where I grew up, the locals thought it was a Rolls-Royce! That was always good for a laugh.

Of course, European cars of that era handled much better than their American contemporaries. They had to- many of their highways had no speed limits. Driving that old Benz was like entering a whole different world.

The best thing about that car is- we still have it!

painted to look pretty, but we squeezed a CobraJet 350 into her and she was NASTY! Lovely to look at, hard to hold and we had fun, fun, fun til Daddy took the Cobra away! Actually, it was marriage, a job and reality, but that's life!

Holman and Moody full race cam, three Holly 2-barrel "doubles" on a Weiand log manifold 4.11 rear with welded spiders and Schaefer flywheel and clutch. Mallory ignition system, and of course slicks the width of Long Island.

Give me a GTO anyday

I like the '68-'70s best because of the styling and decent motors. The '71-'72 had nice styling too, but emission controls choked off some horsepower. Of course, the '64-'67s are sweet too.

We took an Amtrak trip to and from New Orleans (from Atlanta). When we stopped in Birmingham, Alabama, I noticed them removing a private car from the back of te train. It was neat!

4 barrel, V-8, dual carb, twin exhaust Nova SS.

My two girls put on more miles than I did during their Junior and Senior high school days. They also didn't lack for male companionship.

After sitting for to many years I sold it to a car buff who completely restored it. I'd like it back now.

Second favorite is the first car, a 1952 Ford coupe with the shift on the column. Had my first date with Linda in that car, to the drive-in and .......... Ah, memories.

My first car

was a 67 Nova that I bought for 250.00. Fours kids beat on it before I bought it. I had it all thru high school and one night a girl friend said " I want to be in that car when its dies ". I said " get In ".

My next car was my favorite a 1971 camaro. I could start that car by reaching in a turning the ignition, did'nt even have to be int he car. She would purr.

For the last twenty years its been Vans and pick ups.

With two small kids this is a close as I get to some fun.

I remember the \"barber-pole\" speedo

but that didn't come out till a few years later. This one has a dial-type with the rest of the gauges arranged to the side of the dial. Very simple, very effective.

The Lovely Naoko likes it too. I might teach her the art of stick-shifting on it.

I remember those Fairlanes

we had a '64, with the 260 small-block V8 and a 3-speed column shift with overdrive. My dad got his first set of Michelin radials on that car. They made a real big difference!

a 1956 Mercedes Benz 300SL coupe, silver with red interior. For those who don't know it, it the gull-wing classic.

Second, a 1973 lotus europa with aftermarket turbo, in the Johnny Player colors (black with gold detailing.) I got to drive one a few times and it has great memories.

Third, a 1930s Cord in classic creme color.

For a real oldie, a 1916 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

A classic Stanely Steamer!!!!!!!! C'mon on this web site nobody???? For me I don't know I'm sucker for anything with a motor. I currently have an 83Datsun 280zx turbo. A car that has been called by critics one of the most 10 underrated performance cars of all time. I love it, strght 6 with bosch injection it always runs 100% no headaches. Mines a German market car "grey" imported. Has lowered suspension and lots of other factory goodies the U.S. cars didn't get. Back in the day it was fun embarasing Mustangs and Camaros and any pre 85 Corvette was a tasty snack.
Not my favorite car of all time though, there are so many on my wish list

today is a golden age for cars so many new cars are Soooooo good I'm surprised no one picked any.
Bmw, basically anything "M" Think M5 a comfy 4dr sedan that can hold all your luggage and the thing is 400HP!!!!
infiniti G35 coupe A bargain Z performance with a trunk and 4seats nice looking and thosands cheaper than anything in it's class.
Subaru WRx/ Mitsubishi Evo These are as close to street legal race car as you can get.
Too bad american companies can't produce anything like those 2 cars.

The 1 ton was a restore by a neighbor, a retired body shop guru. Over a gallon of Porsche red enamel on that cab!

My first car

was a 63 VW beetle. That car was amazing. I changed the engine 6 times. I could change an engine in an hour. 4 bolts and slide it out. My fav was my second car though. A 66and 1/2 fastback mustang. Lee Iococa brought this out shorty after the original coupe and didn't want to wait for 67 to release it. I was Wimbledon White and looked like it was going fast even when sitting still. Sold it when wife and babies came into the picture. Wish I had it now. Currently I like the Prowler and the new Thunderbird. WW

Figured i couldn't be the only one thinking steamer! Why do so many pick cars from thier youth?? Interesting isn't it? I love em all even pre war stuff like the Cords and Duesenburg Arguably that was the last time america built truly world class cars. Actually i was a kid in the 70s and early eighties and pretty much all the cars sucked then. The "Bandit " Transam was about the only thing worth collecting from that time period.Mustang was only 145HP, Camaro 160, My z was 200, Corvette 205. Those numbers wouldn't be competitive for a familly sedan these days.

I had a '65 Fairlane Sports Coupe in Caspian Blue with blue interior. It had a 289 V8 factory blueprinted engine with 3 speed auto on the floor. Trim was top of the line and it was fast! It finally rotted out from under me in 1983. The under body frame was in such bad shape it wouldn't pass state inspection. So, I sold it to a guy for peanuts. I still miss it. Probably scrap by now. If I ever see another like it, I will buy it in a heartbeat.

Ford/Shelby made 999 of them for Hertz to rent. Seemed to be very popular, some came back with marks where roll-bars had been welded in. Only a 1 year deal. Even liability scared them in 65.
