water heater hoods

Lately have seen commercial water heaters without draft hoods. Why? I thought they always needed them? These were not new installs as if not sent with.

Could you share a picture?
Digital or perhaps a shot from the installation manual?
Something sounds strange. Are there screw holes present implying the vent pipe is SUPPOSED to be connected directly to the heater vent outlet" (As opposed to a three legged hole/tap surrounding the heater top?)
No draft hood implies you must install one downstream from thge vertical breech. Should be stated in the installation pages.
Don't tell me there is no installation page? Typically "stuck" in a plastic envelope glued to the side of the unit...

This was a used w/h. It had no hood, but because we moved it we installed a hood. Old tin was attached to the dampner. Just courious. thanks0 -
Damper?
There was a stack damper attached to this thingy?
Or did you mean draft hood? Was this unit oil by any chance? Never mind. Couldn't be. They never use draft hoods on oil fired units. They would use a draft regulator.
Now THAT's a whole different bag of donuts.

Draft Hoods not always needed
under ANSI Z83.3 for Large Boilers and some commercial products a draft hood may not be required. I would suggest getting in touch with the manufacturer or get the installation manual for the unit.
If one was not required and you add one it will change the entire combustion process and may even make Carbon Monoxide due to excessive cooling of the flame due to increased draft. Or it may have the reverse affect of not enough draft ultimately same result.
Some commercial water heaters also some times had double draft hoods attached to them.0
