What's your favorite question?

Like.....

What is the stand-by efficiency of that boiler? You know, when it's not running....

or...

I installed my own boiler last year, and it works very well, but I want to ask one question. What is that 8" round hole in the top of it for?

    Funny you should ask, Dan.
Over the weekend I managed to catch up on some of my favorite reading.
In the May 2004 PME you wrote an article entitled "Risky Living". You talked about a contractor who installed in-floor radiant for free when the owner balks at the cost of doing the basement/lower level, and then charging for the entire installation when Mr Owner decides that he wants it done anyway.
This is a great idea as long as you get the final hook-up and can recoup your investment, but what's to keep them from trying to, and getting, someone else to hook it up for just the cost of hooking it up? As your friend said,'That's why they have so much, they don't like to part with it'. Does he have it in writing that if the system is hooked up to the infloor that only he is allowed to do it?
In our case we won't finish up someone else's job because we don't know what's been done there.

    All from one man...

...an accountant who hired me (hourly) to remodel/rebuild an older home in atrocious shape for his newlywed daughter. Attic apartment upstairs to be rented.

"I have to pay for those?" [Scale plans--for the addition containing kitchen, bath and laundry.]

"Why do they [daughter and son-in-law] need plug-ins in the bedrooms? Don't they still make wind-up clocks?"

    "Do you really need to put a sink in the bath room? [Upstairs apartment.}

    Some of my favorites

I need to order an exhaust fan. Can you tell me what the static pressure is up here in (name a town)?

Do I have 3-phase power in my building?

If I hold the phone up to it, can you listen and tell me what's wrong with it?

    Who else sells these things?

    There are so many...

But currently the most popular seems to be, "Can I make payments on this ?" Popular with them not me. I've got one guy who said he'd pay Thursday when he got his check. Just didn't say which Thursday or how much. $20/month so far, the interest is about $15/month. Boy did he howl ! I'll be retired before he's done.

    Go Home

On the coldest day on record in Cleveland, Ohio I had a tech turn off his radio and leave for the day...at 4pm.

When told that his co-workers worked well into the night and asked to explain himself, he replied, "Was that a problem?"

If I had a quarter every time ...

... a customer asked me, "Why did it (valve, faucet, toilet, etc.) break/go bad/leak?" when the problem is ususally obvious, such as massive corrosion. Apparently, the average homeowner forgets that many plumbing and heating items are mechanical devices, which tend to wear out with age.

    Igotta get outta this place

"Y'all's very well spoken, what language do they speak in ENGLAND"?

And, again, "are you sure that little thing is going to heat all my hot water".

No, it's going to heat all your COLD water, and make it hot, that's why we call them water HEATERS :O)

    I can't believe I've lasted 25 years, thank God for beer :)

    24 HRs.?

Had a call a few years back from a guy who called looking for a price on a faucet install (he paged me @ 3am. explaining to me how he works the night shift). We pretty much do commercial/industrial by the way and only really did 24 hr service for maintenance contract customers. I'd just got home @ around 1 am after finishing a large boiler in a factory that we started on @ 6am (the day before). he lived almost 80 miles away, and already bought the faucet but wanted a FREE estimate. I told him we did not do residential, and he was too far anyway ( I was still being nice if you could belive). He shouted at me and said "Your ad in the BLUE BOOK says 24 hr emergency service" I calmly replied " Yes, just not 24 hrs. in a row" then hung up!..Robert O'Connor/NJ

    Actually true......really, I'm not kidding

Homeowner who had installed his furnace 2 YEARS before........... "What do you mean about a return air duct"?

The furnace had actually run into its second season with no return air connected. Just sucking through the cracks and gaps in the cabinet. Can we say fried heat exchanger??

While on a cruise to Bermuda

I overheard an elderly woman ask the cruise director if the ship makes its own electricity. Without missing a beat, he said, "No, we use a really long extension cord."

Same cruise, another woman asked the same guy if this elevator goes to the front of the boat.
