I went on a job today that has a TRAN VAPOR HEATING SYSTEM AND A TRANE #210 DIRECT RETURN TRAP.
My question is how I install a new boiler onto this system with out marring the job for the rest of my life. I have the Lost art of steam, and the companion, but can not find out what is needed for the correct installation.
Please help or direct me to were I can find out...
Thank you

  • It's not going to be too tough

Pipe the boiler and header and equalizer exactly per the boiler manufacturer's instructions.

Control the burner through a Honeywell vaporstat, L408A 1132, set to keep the pressure at a half pound (8 ounces).

Use only one air vent location, at the Trane trap. Use a big one. If you save the trap, make sure the check valves below it work.

The trap only functions if the steam pressure gets too high, which the vaporstat controls, so it won't do a thing in the future. It is no longer nessessary, because the coal fire has been replaced.

    Insulate ALL of the piping.

    Clean the boiler water.

Trane systems are great. Each radiator can be adjusted to taste. Be careful of replacement radiator valves that aren't the same type. The valves control how much steam can get through.

Make SURE any traps between the supply main and the return main (crossover traps for venting mains) are holding steam and not leaking by.

    Also

the whole Trane vapor-heating catalog is in the Library.

It pays to wander off the Wall.

Noel is right on, as usual

The only thing I would have to add is, if the system is not piped symmetrically (long main on one side, short on the other or some other variation) you may have to add main vents to the slower-heating portion to balance the system. When the system starts up, all radiators should heat evenly if the supply valves are fully open.
