If it's
only a low limit, put it on the return pipe.
What does it control? The pump?

Joe's reply:
No it needs to turn the burner on. Right now the L8148a is a cold start control i need the boiler to heat a super-stor inderect water heater.
My reply: So I don't understand why you need a L6006; just wire the SuperStor aquastat to the T-TV terminals on your L8148a aquastat relay; it'll turn the burner on when the SuperStor calls for heat.

That will turn the circulator for the heat zones on.I have the super stor on a separate circulator.I just need the boiler to run when there is no call for heat.0 -
Joe
You need a seperate relay not a aquastat.
The L8148 will operate the boiler, just add another relay as another zone. If you want priority you an use a Goldline SP34 or rewire with a Taco SR504 w/priortiy.

You need 2 relays, one for the Super Stor, one for the existing circulator. Each relay will be independant of the other. Wire each relay to the TT of the 8148A to start the burner.

Here's
a link to Taco Zone Controls Wiring Guide in case you don't have it already:

You want to wire two Taco SR501 pump controllers and wire them just like Leo said.

The reason i want to add the L6006 is:I was told that a oil boiler should not be a cold start. The instructions for the L8148a has a diagram with the L6006 as a low limit controler
I just dont know if i should clamp it to the supply pipe which is iron and if it would be accurate.I think this would be much cheaper and easier than going with two realays.I also had thought to replace the L8148a with a L7124u but it is much more expensive. So the question is since there is no tapping for a well for the L6006 is the clamp down any good or is there any place else that i can install it? Thanks0 -
Strap on Aquastat
will work on the riser coming out of the boiler. Thats how they did it in the early days of automatic burners.

Strap-On
aquastats can get you into trouble, especially if they control the burner. If your circulator stops for any reason, the strap-on will not be reading accurate water temperatures of what's going on inside the boiler and the only thing that will prevent a runaway boiler is the high limit.
What about keeping the existing pump and zoning with zone valves; one for the heating and one for DHW. On a call for heat (either one), the zone valve opens and turns on the pump. You can even do DHW priority with the right controller. Take a look in the Taco wiring guide (see above link) at the zone valve controllers (ZVC products). I believe they have options for oil fired boilers.
Better yet, check with Weil-McLain [(219)879-6561]; it bugs me that they don't have a toll free number.

The only thing
he has right now is the high limit. Adding an aquastat won't change that.
An aquastat with a well will provide more exact control no argument.
However strap on aquastat are made for this purpose and are listed as such.
You could take out the 8148 and put in an 8124 The boiler will maintain whatever you set the low limit at. The Hi limit and low limit are built in as well as a reverse switch which you may not need.

Yes Robert i was going to switch to the 7124u or the 8124 but it is much more expensive than the 6006 i wanted to see if i could get away with installing the 6006.I also got the idea of moving the relief valve to a tee on the riser or to the 1/2 inch tapping that is provided for the air vent or expansion tank on top next to the supply line since it is pluged and using the relief valve tapping for a well for the 6006.Any thoughts?0 -
No No No
Leave the relief valve in the factory location and do not alter its location under any circumstance.
Alans suggestion to consult Weil MClean is a good one.
George Lanthier teaches what you are proposing in your other post about the strap on aquastat. Thats how I would do it.Just make sure you buy the aquastat with the factory hardware to strap it on.
I like warm start boilers i don't like cold start. It will also make your indirect work better.

with a seprate circ. relay why cant you power from the 8148,you should have 2 sets of dry contacts on your new circ. relay.1 set to the indirect, the other to the, or thru the high limit on the 8148.when the indirect calls it will fire the burner & and circ. for hot water make up only.heat circut will not run.jb0
