    simple thought but

If they are aimed toward's the boiler they are on the return. Pointed away they are on the supply...;) just a guess without seeing

He's probably showing you how good he is. A 50/50 guess, supply/return, he'll be right half the time. I don't agree w' "if it's pointing to the boiler it's..." The piping pattern can run towards the boiler and still be a supply.
The real check is to follow the piping as best as you can and make the determination. Have someone turn up the tstat and sit at that zone valve. When it pulls around which way is the heated water coming from? This simple test should dictate S or R. Also where are the purge tees?

    where is the best place

to locate zone valves? Supply or return. And, when using Honeywell valves, are they less likely to bang if on the return?

    Depends.....

if we were all clayrvoiant like the rest of the people we could avoid these types of problems :)
... I left my mind reading hat at the habberdaserry :)
...I havent gotten my X-ray glasses back from the optometrist..... honestly that is nonsence... unless he installed every zone valve in the world with an arrow on it. as to divining what side supply or return it is connected and in which direction its pointed is a laugh...
especially walking up to a new system piped by someone else that has remote valves and the boiler has yet to fire.
.. maybe you could ask him for help at the race track...

    Put your hand

on the two pipes to that zone. With that zone calling for heat at the thermostat, the hotter will be the supply. Is the zone valve on this one, or the cooler pipe?

I always zone on the return pipe. If you use the new check pumps you now have positive flow check on supply and return. I've never had a banging ZV problem with the ZVs on the return, either.

    :)

the cold ones the return...what a simple way to say it:) i am a creature of method the method being put the zones on the return .see,if you found a boiler with zone valve on it and either hot rod or i piped them they would be on the return. then you too could be clairvoyant:) :)) my reason is possibly variant from his so i will share the reason...super hot water pounding away at the system components vs cooler water seems the pieces would enjoy a longer life. thats my story and i'm stickin 2 it:)
