Have any of you heard mention that we have about 1 million acres on fire here? ...?

Yeah!
Saw it on the Evening News with Dan Rather. Pictures from outer space showing the smoke plumes and infrared pictures. Lots of little fires, probably lightning started.
We'll send you some of our monsoon like weather and put them out:-)

So that's
where all that global warming has gone to.
We haven't had three consecutive warm days yet this spring or summer here in New England. Not complaining though, it's been very nice. Rain mostly at night with blue sky and sun during the day.
Is it causing any problems yet, Weez?

Fires have a important role in nature
Fires seem bad in the immediate sense. But they are crucial for long-term regeneration of the forest. Remember when Yellowstone caught fire in the 80's. They thought the forest would be marred forever. I was there in '92 and it was already thick and green with growth. There are some species of trees that require a fire to germinate. There are a lot of people who worry about the Adirondack mountains in my neck of the wooods. There has not been a major fire here in over 100 years. There are some areas choked off with blow-downs, dead growth, etc that a fire here would burn intense, large, and fast. The Adirondack park is a mix of private and public land. So the loss in dollars would be huge. It really makes you think that there should be controlled fires set every so often.

Fires
Weezbo, were are you located? Hopefully not too near. The radio said yesterday that we could be getting smoke here in Anchorage by today from the Fairbanks fires.
The state has banned all private fireworks in most areas, but I doubt that will stop them. Just hope we don't have a repeat of the Millers Reach fire that was started by fireworks several years ago.

Hey guys, send us some rain, we need it.0 -
Fingers crossed.....
i figure God needs plumbers what with all the "leaks" the place usually has...(Texas this year) however they seem to be ever so diligent in our neck of the woods..we have had the sun Blocked out for about a week now. It may Rain soon. if it puts it out Great! if not ,the fire is in the valley and the valley has its own Micro climate that circles around every 5 days....could get a lot nastier than it has. Apathy is the thing human beings need to get after in order to control thier environment..The other day i was thinking that i should put an ad in the papaer and get some able bodied guys with a Brain to get some equipment rolling ...hey the army is doing ziltch and the rest of them stick thier finger in the air and talk about the need to show them your license insurance and redgistration...my opinion is it is a form of war and that the general populace needs to unite and DO something....a buddy said well the govenor came up to town well, thats Great what exactly did that do to put the fire out? There are guys that have machinery and others with trucks others that can operate the machinery,i am no big time operator however hey i could clear hundreds of acres with a d-12 a day. three of them side by side could put a small break in the flow patterns of the fire. some other guys could be back burning the burm piles and others using d - 6s and d8-s to cut a small break around roads widening the " Gap" so people could possibly use the roads to evacuate...so i started a rumor a while ago that someone needs to be doing this and that the effort so far seemed to be marshalled by idiots:) last night i happened to listen to the news on the boob tube and it sounded like maybe the apathy had worn off and there might even be something of a creative effort going on Now.0 -
Our Experts have put a temporary Ban on Open Fires.

Fires
Good Luck guys. I hope that you don't get too close to the fires like we did last year. In the Okanagan (British Columbia), we lost close to 300 homes last summer. Then the guys in LA got even hit (much)harder than we did. Let's hope that you won't have to go through the same.
My prayers and wishes are with you folks up there.0 -
