Incorrect near-boiler piping

This is the boiler that started the dropped header club. After I changed this one, and found out how much time and piping stress dropped headers saved (thank you, Bill Brobst, of F W Webb) I had to share this knowledge with Steamhead, with Ron, Jr, and MadDog and Gerry and all of the others that were interested.

Here's a few

Just got the first one this morning. That's a Dunkirk (Sears) 187,500 input boiler with a single 2 inch riser and no header. There is about 400 EDR connected radiation

#2 Gee what's a header? One pipe end of mains joined above water line too.

#3 is not quite so obvious. The "header" reduces to 1 1/4 inches right after the system take off with a concentric bushing. Also, one return doesn't go through the hartford. Just before pic was taken, I replaced the Hot water system end of main vents with the Gortons you see. At least it is sized about right.

#4 This is a standard header installation by an old timer... a well respected contractor in my area (gets top buck too). When he was told this piping layout is incorrect he said "I've been doing it that way for 30 years and never had a problem". It's nice he doesn't cheat on pipe size..... all 3 inch. Another one with one pipe end of mains joined above water line. Oh and those end of main vents are radiator vents.

It's still like this. The guy who owns this baby also owns a plumbing and heating supply house. Installed by a "good" customer, I guess. The other one is history.

...this one has been repiped. The photos of the copper piping are pretty amazing. This puppy was BANGING and squirting water and all the bad things. We ripped out ALL the steam piping and the header and repiped everything in the basement from scratch

Pinehurst picture was piped like a hot water system, the installer must have tought it was neat there was two tappings, one for each main. There was no header and no equalizer but there was a box full of Hoffman 75 vents that the owner was changing frequently.

Ridge was from an old one pipe system that worked OK but the new homeowner needed a new boiler in order to get home insurance.

I hope you can get something out of the pictures even though there were not made on location.

it keep going off on low water...i looked at the owner and all i could say was ''no kidding''..we replaced the whole boiler.

I can see how the HO gets confused, besides the equalizer connection on the wrong end is that a small supply with a main vent on it on top left or did they really bring a return in there?

no, thats a return line behind the main.

but being piped this way when it steamed it sent the water out to the system, and probably slanted the waterline..the lwc would trigger the feeder..the system would flood..it was ugly..

that the two crab boilers go to. Just ventin'out the side wall, yup!
