Migration?
The air is re-absorbed from the non-bladder type expansion tank into the cool water - once the boiler temp drops.
If you are referring to a bladdered expansion tank - pre-charged, the loss of air in the bladder would be osmosis?
Perhaps "permeation"?
How about "pressure loss"?
Or even, "Wassupwitdatthing"?

Air quality
Most references suggest a 1lb reduction in the air charge will occur in a bladder style tank per year through any one of Ken's methods. Maintaining the precharge or at least testing it should be part of any annual system service. A simple little digital tire guage is fast and simple. Enjoy.....Dan

But remember...
It is only fast and simple - if you drain enough water from the system to see zero on the boiler pressure gage; which in and of itself, is anything BUT easy.

NITROGEN
iS THE GAS OF Choice
That's what the factory charges them with ,,, not air0 -
My world
OK, Not everyone installs isolation and purge valves.
I do.
All the little tests become much simpler with a little design forethought.
