BOOKS FOR THE SHELTER KIDS IN NYC

So I thought I'd start again.

Here's the deal. New York Cares, a non-profit organization in New York City (with which I'm very involved)does a lot of good for a lot of people throughout the year. One of the things they do is to run Book Clubs for kids of all ages. This is fairly new and most of these kids live in shelters and can't afford to buy their own books. The Club picks one book and reads it together, and then discusses it. Usually, the book relates to the lives of these city kids. The goal is to show them how wonderful books are, and to inspire them to read at an early age, and more and more as they grow. This, as far as I'm concerned, is the antidote to much of what goes wrong in the lives of these city kids. If you can't read, you can't get a good education, and you can't get a good job, and the cycle just repeats itself into the next generation. Most of these kids have a tough time reading because their parents can't read. We're all trying to break that cycle. You teach a kid to read and anything is possible.

So right now we need these books:

The Wish List

We already have half of what we originally asked for, thanks to the Wallies. The original list represents 12 Book Clubs throughout New York City. What you're looking at here is pure potential. You bend a twig, you change the direction in which the tree grows.

Please help me out by buying one of these books (any one you choose). All you have to do is buy it as you normally would by clicking and following the Amazon.com directions. But when you get to the Ship To part, don't send the book to yourself. Rather, click OTHER and choose Kathryn Reynolds as the person to whom Amazon will send the book. Kathryn runs the Book Club program at New York Cares and she'll see that the books get delivered to the children.

This one means a lot to me, folks. If you can help, I'd really appreciate it.

You never stand so tall as when you stoop to help a child. Thanks.
Retired and loving it.

    Good news here:

This is from today's Daily News:

    A Plan to Help Homeless

Note the mention of 15,000 children currently living in shelters. These are the kids that we're helping. Thanks.

We've reached the finish line. Thanks so much.

Here's an email I just got from Kathryn:

    Hi Dan,

Sorry to do this to you because we have just gotten an overwhelming
response from your web site, but could you please remove the middle
school book club wish list from your web page?

Time Inc., wants to fulfill all the remaining books for us, so I have
deleted the remaining requests on Amazon.

Thank you so much for helping us out with this. We have already receivd
over half of the books that we will need for next year. Thank you thank
    you thank you!

    Sincerely,
    Kathryn Reynolds
