My Father

When I was ...

Four years old: My daddy can do anything.

Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot.

Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad.

Eight years old: My dad doesn't know exactly everything.

Ten years old: In the olden days, when my dad grew up, things were sure different.

Twelve years old: Oh, well, naturally, Dad doesn't know anything about that. He is too old to remember his childhood.

Fourteen years old: Don't pay any attention to my dad. He is so old-fashioned.

Twenty-one years old: Him? My Lord, he's hopelessly out of date.

Twenty-five years old: Dad knows about it, but then he should,
because he has been around so long.

Thirty years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all, he's had a lot of experience.

Thirty-five years old: I'm not doing a single thing until I talk to Dad.

Forty years old: I wonder how Dad would have handled it. He was so wise.

Fifty years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him. Too bad I didn't appreciate how smart he was. I could have learned a lot from him.

    When I was a boy

When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

    stupid stage

This is a natural phenomenon of parenting, applies to both genders. You have to go through a "stupid stage" during which you become so dumb, you know virtually nothing. The effects are temporary, usually lasting 7 to 8 years, however you can experience more than one stage in your lifetime. Oddly this period of brain misfunction occurs during your child or childrens teenage years. Do not concern yourself or seek medical advice. There is no cure other than to allow time to heal the affliction. I remember my parents suffering through this ailment which started around 1959 when my sister turned 13 and ended in 1971 when I turned 20. I myself have had 2 bouts of "stupid stage" disease, but have fully recovered at this time.

Take the time to go on vacation with your dad! He won't be here for ever. My dad finally got me to go on vacation with him, and I am glad I did. He was only with us another 1 1/2 years after that trip.

I'm glad I did, and I would have deeply regretted it if I had not.

Yeah Weezbo, I know where your coming from...

Sounds like my dad. He admitted many times though, "I know I'm a nasty bas+@*%, but I'm just trying to be a good father to you!" I just had a vacation with him - played horseshoes, drank beers, and listened to the same rants I heard 30 years ago, every day. Now he's in bad shape after a heart attack, and I don't know if I'll get to do that again with him, no less see him alive again. Give him his time, he obviously desires it with you. Peace

Just spent 5 days with both my parents

in Las Cruces New Mexico. We drove out to Phoenix to attend my neices HS graduation. Longest road trip I've taken in years, usually jump on an airplane when I need to go somewhere, its quicker. Had a great time.

In the last few years we have visited pretty much every year for a week or so. Last year was a family reunion celibrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary, the year before that we attended his final bomber reunion (B29s based on Tinian during WWII) that was a great time, met his remaining crew members and toured the air museum in Tuscon. They are in their 80's now and a little more cranky than they used to be, but we still enjoy visiting and will continue whenever we can.
