Building ships in bottles and HX ers in tanks

to find inexpensive large capacity buffer tanks, for solar or wood boilers.

This HDPE tank, 275 gallons, came to me, free! The manufacture is comfortable with 150°F continous operating temp.

Other manufactures claim higher temperatures are possible if the tank is completely supported. Which this one is??

I'm going to stuff as much fin tube into 'er as I can solder up and fit through the opening for my HX. Then heat it up with this new wood boiler till it squirms :)

Where's my boots!

    Yeah

Foley, I had a ball, caught up with old friends, met new, and talked all day. Still need a few more warm bodies. See you in July.

nron this is the unit that you looked at in Loveland.

Rich, I tried a pex hx coil a few years back. It was replacing a corroded copper coil in a large solar/ wood boiler buffer tank. Didn't work very well, pex is a great insulator :)

Then again the type K copper pinholed after 15 years in the sealed tank, possibly a ph or uncleaned flux issue?

Still searching for that perfect material!

    Just missed it

This was posted on my local "freecycle" group. I missed it by about 10 minutes.

If you guys have never freecycled, you should check it out. Get rid of some junk, maybe trade for something good.

Subject: [freecyclespfldil] OFFER: Large LP GAS TANK (500 gal.; I think)

I have an extra LP gas tank that is free for the taking if you have a
use for it. It is a good tank and is not just junk. It would be
great for use at a cabin or for the home.

    The only issue with LP

tanks, specfically used ones, is getting rid of that freaking smell they add to the gas. Wow! I have a 175 gallon as a buffer to my wood boiler now. I washed it with warm water and HD Rhomar cleaner. Tooks months for the smell to go away after I let the tank vent in the back field.

Other than that, and lack of "ideal" tapping connections, they can easily, and safely handle normal boiler pressure,10-30lbs. and the sheer weight of the steel adds some good mass.

I stood mine on end in a dish of 4" foam, used strips of 2" foam, then vinyl backed R-19 fiberglass around the whole enchilada.

Looks like a mummy, but works like a mother :)

Lots of those portable Barbcue companies, around here, use 500 gallon tanks as cookers and smokers, on wheels. They start out with brand new tanks, however and cut hinged lids into the top. Some company in N.C. actually sells them modified for this use.

Used tanks go for a buck a gallon around here. And they go fast! Not a lot more $$s for a brand new one :)
