the open expansion tank in the attic has 4 pipes coming from it. 1 in the side and 1 out the bottum , i know this is to keep the tank from freezing. Out the top it has an overflow going out thru the roof, a "t" coming out the side of this going were?

  • So there's

a tee on the pipe going through the roof? I've never seen that before.

Coming out of the tee, one branch goes through the roof and the other branch goes somewhere else, right? Can you follow the pipe. It could be an equalizer of some sort.

You may be able to tell if you fill the system and watch where the water comes out. Could be a surprise if the pipe isn't sound, i.e. water coming out of the ceiling.

the roof pipe is a vent

and the one from the tee on this pipe should be the overflow pipe..around here, Cleveland, they run back down to the basement to the floor sink next to the boiler.

    I think Gerry nailed it

the pipe coming off the bull (branch) of the tee most likely goes into the basement, so the person filling the system knows when to shut the water off. This "tell-tale" setup was also used with gravity-feed water-supply tanks in rural homes- you'd start pumping (almost always manually, but sometimes with a gasoline-powered unit) until water ran down the tell-tale pipe to let you know the tank was full.
