On the older type Trane heat pumps model # BD724A100B1. There is an Out door Temp. sensor (ODS) Themistor type-resistance will vary with outdoor temp. There was more resistance when it got colder. Its wired in with common on the 24Volt transformer and goes to the B terminal on the thermostat. The B terminal on the unit and thermostat said out door anticipator. There is a W2 wire on the unit that powers second stage when in defrost or if the unit reaches its balance pont. The thermostat type was BAY28x194. Just trying to figure out what's its function.
Thanks Anthony

The outdoor anticipator
helps the thermostat prevent 'droop'. That's what I remember it being referred to. I believe it added heat during the off cycle to prevent the stat from bringing on the heat pump too soon after the thermostat was satisfied. Sort of like an heat anticipator, in reverse.
The outdoor anticipator was a feature used with GE thermostats...Lennox used them as well into the early 90's.

It is
usually used as a delay to prevent short cycling of the compressor to allow pressures to equalize, or a minimum temp sensor for operation to prevent it from operating below a certain temp.
