VT just passed a law that bans the use of water heaters as boilers see the attached link!

    Did They?

Looks like they just delete a section of regulations pertaining to use of WH for space heating (I can't find the verbage of the section deleted)

Elsewhere they defer to other codes and standard for the safety and performance of water heaters, boilers etc.

    Reason?

What was the logic behind the decision? Any details on that?

I hate to burst your bubble, but......

there's enough exceptions built into their codes to drive a tractor trailer load of water heaters through! Even if they did attempt to enforce their regs, it's just for the licensed contractors - as always. Homeowners are specifically exempted from having to be licensed when working on their own water heaters! DIY internet sales will go forth unabated for dual use open systems.

    VT Water Heaters

I thought Vermont was where this started, the use of a DHWH for a boiler. (I always liked the idea for low-temp systems. Heck, where else can you get a boiler rated for 125 psi and handle raw water, yet operated it at a fifth of that pressure and recirculated O2-Free water for $250 bucks?.) I remember seeing this back in the 1970's. Wonder if the boiler folks protested or if there was a problem somewhere that nobody read about?

    not designed as a boiler

i think you guys are missing the big picture, our state says you have to use the appliance for its intended purpose. most hwt are listed for potable water only. there are some listed for both. this type of system hurts all of us trying to design and install a system that is safe, follows ALL codes, and is designed for heating. we typically dont even attempt to do these systems, we leave these for the homeowner / or the non-licensed man working for 15 bucks an hour. marc
