Tom McCart Passing.....Riles

TOM McCART lost his prolonged battle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) earlier today.

Tom had a very diverse background in the HVAC business with extraordinary successes in sales and management. In order to share his many successes he founded, "No Secrets Training Systems" and www.nosecrets.com. While he could, he travelled a ridiculous schedule holding as many seminars around the country as possible. He loved helping contractors.

Although Tom's background was as a "Scorched Air Guy" he would have been a perfect fit on "The Wall" because he was so generous in sharing his experiences with anyone.

He often wrote for "Contracting Business" and "Contracting Canada". Additionally, he was a regular speaker at ACCA National Conventions and COMFORTECH. I understand a recent article in "The News" by John Hall featured Tom McCart.

I had the good fortunate of getting to know him well over the last three years. A truly challenging time for him as he fought ALS with an amazing spirit. As the disease continued to restrict his mobility he NEVER lost his spirit and refused to allow it to prevent him from sharing his thoughts and advise with anyone interested. ALS created a remarkable challenge, yet he always moved forward.

As the disease took a stronger hold he stopped travelling, but continued to hold sessions in this hometown of Ft. Myers FLA. He was always available by phone or email.

What struck people right away about Tom was his incredible frankness. If someone expressed a thought that obviously was founded by very little thought, he would tell you. He didn't pull any punches, because with all his heart he wanted to see others enjoy the success he had achieved.

He was so generous with information. If he knew you, there was no limit to how much he committed to help you. I have been blessed by having spent quality time with Tom McCart. I gained so much from my experiences with him and various customers (contractors) of mine.

As his health took this recent terminal turn, I am crushed knowing I never had a chance to tell him how much I valued our friendship. Tom McCart was a great man. God Bless Tom McCart.

    Sorry to

hear of his passing. You spoke to me of him before and I wanted to meet him and was about to sign onto his carribian cruise seminar on your recommendation of him. He sounds like a remarkable fellow. It takes a special person to keep his spirit strong in the face of grave illness. Thanks for letting us know. WW

    Tom McCart

I was stunned to hear of Tom's passing as I had been in communication with him via e-mail as recently as last week. Tom was a good friend of mine as well and I will miss him. Like many people here on the wall, Tom was very generous with his knowledge and his willingness to help out his fellow contractors. Above all, he wanted us to be successful and professional businessmen. My heart and my thoughts go out to Tom's family. -DF

The News' article was written by Tom's close friend and neighbor in Florida, Charlie Greer. Both his column and your words are a nice tribute to an industry giant. He will be missed.

    Tom

Riles, every word you wrote pertained to my relationship with Tom as well.

As recently as June 2, he passed on some unbelievably sage advice to me.

My most vivid memory of Tom was his fierce determination to help contractors - even if he had to tell them something they didn't want to hear. Which he did almost everyday of his life!

On the subject of certain contractors I once said to him, "the heck with them Tom, if they do not wish to improve let them get what they deserve." But he would not hear of it. He thought that you had to be doggedly persistent (family version of comment) with them. Because they really are capable of understanding and changing their ways. And of course he is right.

It is because of Tom and people like him that people in our beloved industry have recognized better ways of doing business and are beginning to turn things around.

I will miss him in person but his spirit lives on.

    What Bubba don't know

    Dave:

You probably know this, Tom's favorite saying was, "What Bubba don't know, Bubba don't know." He said Bubba's not a bad guy he just don't know.

He also made us all laugh as he referred to less refined contractors as "Rusty" for the guy in the rusty van. Along with Rusty's collegues "Scooter, Six Pack Charlie, & Bubba".

He never meant anything nasty by these references. He just wanted to help those less refined to raise their awareness of everything they needed to consider in order to run a successful business.

His services were held yesterday in Ft. Myers FLA, but I agree Dave, his spirit lives on.

I am better person having spent time with Tom McCart.
