Effects of City Water Chlorine on Vulnerable Components

Tom Meyer

With the EPA changing the maximum allowed chlorine in city water to 0.4 mg/L, has anyone seen any negative effects on vulnerable hydronic system components, both open and closed systems (e.g. O-rings, gaskets, etc.)?

Has anyone seen a study addressing this?

Thanks for your help,

    switch

Hello: The switch by some utilities to chloranimine (sp?) is causing a little trouble. You may find good info at AWWA. They've helped me with this sort of research in the past.

If I were a promoter of open systems

the chlorine issues would sure keep me awake at night!

Especially when some promote watering the lawn with public (chlorinated, and fluoridated (sp) water to get free radiant cooling :)

All to save the enviroment, of course!

Wasn't chlorine was the downfall of PB and the acetal fittings.

As I understand it antioxidant packages (chemicals) are added to pex tubing in the manufacturing process. One reason is to combat the effects of chlorine.

I think these packages get stressed, or used up at high levels of chlorine, especially at higher temperatures. I'm not sure what happens next. And the folks that know don't talk about it much :)

Seems whenever water quality issues arise in public water systems they start stepping up the chlorine levels. Same with public swimming pools :)

Chlorine is considered a necessary and safe product, for water treatment, when used properly and in moderation. Who's adding the chlorine to your public system?? How much did they inject this morning??

Maybe we should get a Jana lab person to give a seminar on this at ISH??

maybe they are trying to kill off the termites that are attacking the foam insulation:) maybe its a muni wide effort:) limited radiant cooling and termite abatement:) see, you didnt know i had a sence of humor:)
