my old radiator

I have a radiator that is about 5 feet long and 38 inches high. It has a food warmer (30 inches long and 14 inches deep) in the center with 11 short columns under it. There are 6 full-size columns on each side of the food warmer. It is stamped “American Radiator Co.” on the end and, at the bottom near the fitting it is stamped “Rococo”. I believe the Standard Sanitary Company merged with the American Radiator Co. in 1929 & became American-Standard, Inc. Can you give me any information on this beautiful piece and is it unusual?

    You have a \"Rococo Hot-Closet Radiator\"!

in size #6, which has an EDR rating of 93 square feet. In a steam system it would emit 22,320 BTU per hour, and in a hot-water system 13,950 BTU/hour with the boiler water temp at 180 degrees. Info from the 1916 Ideal Fitter catalog.

You are correct about American Radiator Co. becoming half of American-Standard.

This is a rather rare piece, so take good care of it!

Here is a page out of Dan's Holohan's book, Every Darn Radiator (available at this web site). Is this the one you are talking about? I would love to get my hands on one of these. Are you in the Denver area? Is it still in use?

I believe there is also a catalog with these in it somewhere in "the library".

    Dave - my old radiator

Dave, yes, that looks like what I have, except mine has 6 columns on each side of the center warmer. I am in NC. No, it is not being used for a heat source, but it is in excellent condition.

How rare is this Rococo Hot-Closet Radiator?

    Rare Enough

that I've never seen one up close- only in old catalogs.

Can you take a pic of yours and post it here?

    cooking

I wonder if you coudl cook in one of those liek a crock pot, especially if it was steam. That one looks like it was hot water since it has a bleeder valve but I don't really seem to see where the return connection was.

You probably could slow=cook on a cold day

What a beauty! The return connection is the one on the right, and the supply should be on the left, not visible in the photo.

I have hopes of one day putting it in use, maybe in our retirement home (not the nursing home!), but I would have to convince my husband, which would be no small feat. It probably weighs 500 pounds and I have no concept of its monetary worth.

Wow! What a beauty! As you can see, we are all drooling over this thing. As for the worth, one without the cabinet
could bring $300 to $500 easily. With the cabinet, who knows.
You have certainly found the place to put it up for auction.
