Any boaters out there?

I've gotten 15 "Carbon Monoxide" stories in the past three days and they were all incidents that happened on boats.

Please take care. I want you all around for a long time!

One other issue, there was an incident involving some teens in a cave. Fire department measured 750ppm CO in the cave. They measured this only after they found two teens dead.

A fire can give of HUGE amounts of CO, and in a cave, that CO can last for a long period of time.

CO doesn't go away when spring arrives, it just changes venues.

I'll keep watching.

I'm working on a solution to this boat CO problem...

I put my most recent floating possesion (1961 Montgomery Wards Sea King) into the water this weekend for its mainden voyage. What a mess... Gas,and oil and water really don't mix. Neither do 90 W gear lube and water. After about 1-1/2 hours on the lake futzing with the carburator, I made a decision to turn the cruiser into an electric boat. I had been smart enough to put my small electric trolling motor onto the new craft "just in case", and while on the water gave her a trial with the electric motor and found that it had the perfect trolling speed capabilities. And was virtually silent, odor free, oil free and other than plugging it in when I get off the lake, maintenance free!

The whole reason for obtaining this new boat was to make it easier on myself when I decided I needed to be on the water. It takes about an hour to get the 21' pontoon ready to sail, and about that long to put her away. I wanted something that would take me 10 minutes to get ready, and 10 minutes to stow.

Once I get done converting "Ol' Sparky" to a gas electric hybrid, I'lll take pictures to share with all you land lubbers:-)

For now, I plan to shell the old M/W 35 horse motor, keep the motor shroud, hide the new electric outboard trolling motor within its casing, put three additional batteries and charger below deck (forward) and put a gas powered generator aft to power the trolling motor directly when going for speed (hybrid), or in case she needs juiced up remotely (Lake Powell).

By the way, does anyone know what the initials in B.O.A.T. stand for??? Break Out Another Thousand:-) Another daffynition I heard is that a boat is a hole in the water in which you pour money!

    Ahoy mate! Got batteries?

    Lake Meade

    Mark:

I heard a year or so ago that there are serious CO problems with houseboats on Lake Meade at water level. The houseboats that can be rented have been fitted with chimneys to get the smoke above water level as a safety measure. At the time there were warning renters of the CO problem.

Who would think of this problem in the great outdoors?

    Add some pv panels

they make flexible ones that the solar car racer use, for odd shape mounting, if that helps.

    Long term plan...

is to add a PV panel to the mix as "shade". Then, I won't even have to worry about plugging it in. Just park it with the panel facing South, and forget it! I figure for a few more bucks, I can set an inexpensive inverter and use the boat to power the appliances in the cabin when I'm not there during the Winter.

Good "Ol' Sparky", guard against high utility bills...and polluted water!!

    Hey Mark,

If you're at it, have a look over at the Marine Battery section of my web-site. It may be of interest to you... Considering the very low Peukerts exponent of deep-cycle AGMs, that might be the battery type to go for when using electric propulsion. Even large current draws will thus have little effect on the available capacity of the battery.

As for CO, I ought to get a COExperts unit installed. We only have a small Diesel furnace and a even smaller propane stove, but even small can be deadly. Cheers!
