Reducing Visbile Emissions from High Efficiency Boiler

Hi,

live in an older neighbourhood downtown in the middle house of a triplex with porches.

We recently had installed a high efficiency boiler (trinity combi T200) - but because we have no exposed side walls - we had to vent the boiler at the front of the house.

This looks ugly (thinking of replacing this with a concentric vent terminal)...but worse...in the winter the steam (and the slight gas small as the furnace starts) from the exhaust billows out across the front yard. Not nice for us or our neighbours.

I had thought that there might be some device to use the "cooling by expansion" physical property that I could use to cool the steam before it exits...so it wouldn't be visible.

I have space under the porch at the front of the house to install such a device...but I have no idea if it will work, if it is to code, or where to buy it.

    I don't know of anything

Theoretically it would be possible but at what expense?
One would have to cool and dehumidify the exhaust to equal outdoor ambient conditions in order to eliminate the water vapor from the exhaust. A tall order at 0* and <20% humidity.

    Old Chimney?

Didn't the home have a chimney? I still say running the PVC up the old chimney is the best solution. It's shown in the install manual and you can go up to 100 ft of 3" Vent on natural gas. Just use the sidewall for combustion air.

    Concentric vent

Applications like the one you describe usually go up through the roof with a concentric vent so there is only one pipe showing, they work great.

    Humour Me

Its to late to reuse the chimney...agree this would be the best option (too complicated to explain now)...

So humour me...take a look at the attached pdf file for my idea...

What do you think? Shouldn't be too expensive.

    Thanks

    Trinity exhaust

I wouldn't do anything to alter the venting that isn't in the manufacturers instructions. You could call Trinity and propose your idea and see if they'd write a letter approving it. There's too many lawyers out there to vary from what the manufacturers want. As far as the gas smell, have you checked the combustion for proper CO2, O2, Ox and CO? You can order the concentric terminal from Trinity and that might help with the cool intake air cooling off the exhaust. Are you the artsy type? Make a paper mache dragon and have the exhaust coming out of his mouth. You gotta get creative sometimes in this business ya know.
