having problems with the buderus spill switch? we are experiencing nuisance lockouts right now on a 2 year old install. it is the switch that lets go at 240*F. have checked the flue, and it seems to be in good working order. we are going to change the switch, and monitor the draft hood temp. anything else we could be looking for?

Draft switches
This is a component that can be really a pain in the neck. Havingsaid that, they are frequently good when replaced. Check your vent system. Is it gas or oil. How long is the vent connector. Is it insulated or single wall. Do you have a couple feet of rise off the vent connector prior to the first fitting in the vent conn? Having a fitting to close (approx 3 pipe diameters) to the draft switch can cause problems because the fittings cause turbulence in the flow. What is the size of the vent connector. Is the chimney lined? Is it oversized? Is the termination high enough to prevent any downdrafting and do you have adequate combustion air? Was the unit cycling off in the deep winter or only in the warmer shoulder season? Vent connector design and installation and material choice are real important considerations in successful venting.0 -
All of a sudden?
After two years?
Have the owners added anything to the home like A/C or whole house fan? Anything that exhausts air from the home?

yes/no
the original owner had the a/c tied into the tekmar. the new owners decided that they liked cool bodies, but still warm feet (the whole house is tile), so they had the a/c guy come in and seperate the systems.
i thought that this was the problem at first, but the make-up air vent into the mechanical is about 18x10. we also had the homeowner run the a/c full out yesterday, and it did not appear to affect the draft. also, the limit tripped again last night, when the a/c was not on. plus we ran both systems yesterday at the same time and could easily keep our hands on the draft hood!
the vent does go into a mortar chimney that is not lined and the termination is very exposed, flat roof and all.
i have printed jacks' reply, and am going to have a very close look at the venting when we go to switch the switch (lol!). i am also thinking about phoning the previous owner and see if he had similiar experiences, as he was quite handy and maybe just kept on resetting the switch.
thanx,
