Hard start compressors

Alan,I think you question is concerning start assist devices. Some manufactures frown upon there useage.I personally have used them though for at least 17 years with great success.PTC (positive temperature coefficient) styles
such as Supco's SPP-6 need two be installed w/a time delay relay
(5 minute) so the PTC has time to cool down & reset.York (UPG)recommends the use of the Kickstart brand as an alternative
to a matching start capacitor & start relay to the compressor in the unit. You will need this when the outdoor unit does not have hard start componants installed and the evaporator has a TXV,esp. if it is non-equalizing.R410 is a world I have very little field experance with but it seams
most manufactures are useing scroll technoligy which generally does not warrant hard starting devices as a benifit.Electrically,Three-phase is "hard-starting" as it were.(this is a poor explaination).Puting these devices on a "sticky" compressor may only be delaying the "inevitable".
For a better explation try e-mailing jgraham@supco.com.He will be happy to further explain.

Hard start compressors
Is it good or bad to leave a hard start capacator on a compressor. Does it really mean the compressor is defective? We have had to replace many on warranty, because the customers dont feel comfortable with it. I have had to add many to the 410A units. Is there any type of a hard start for three phase compressors? I have had some that run after reversing them.0 -

Hard start kits
I too have been using them for many years without any problems. On my own A/C after it was one month old. 9 years later and still no problems. I don't put time delay relays in unless there is a problem with short cycling. Single phase compressor motors are PSC type and have very low start torque. I use the Supco SPP6.
If reversing a three phase motor gets it to run it usually means a broken rod wedged against a cylinder.
