I have a customer with an RV-5 a couple of years old and it appears that lately the main burner is not lighting off on every call for heat (well, hot water today-it's getting warm here on LI) Today I was over there and the pilot lights no problem, and most of the time it just keeps running with no main burner. The pilot light is having a hard time keeping the AL-79 full of hot water ;-) What do you think?

Thanks, Phil

but it's obviously a pilot proving or gas valve issue. Time to bust out the multi-meter and be a service tech my man. Burnhams usually use honeywell ignition modules. Is there 24V at MV terminal? If so, it could be the GV.

The Revolution is equipped with a Honeywell Smart Valve and Hot Surface Ignition. As Tom stated, it is probably a flame rectification problem. The first thing I would check are the wires to the pilot assembly. Make sure that the molex plug is in the gas valve good and snug. Are each of the wires to the pilot assembly tightly wrapped with a tan colored woven fiberglass covering? If they are, I would change the pilot assembly and use the newer style where the leads have two loosely wrapped fiberglass coverings in lieu of each wire being tightly wrapped. There were a few of these several years back that were encountering nuisance grounding out of the flame rectification signal due to no coating on the wires under the tight covering. That was corrected by Honeywell a few years back. With the new style ignitor, you can see the blue and black covering on the leads at the plug end. Here is a picture of the older style leads with tightly wrapped covering. If you have the newer style, you can try cleaning the flame rod to ensure its conductivity. Other than that, I would advise changing the ignitor assembly if you are not equipped with the inline adapter to check the flame rectification amperage. Hope this helps.

    OHHHHH

It's one of dose dere "I are so smart" valves from honeywell. That valve/ignitor setup can be hard to diagnose.

    Thanks Glenn

I'll stop in there and check that out. You are the man :-)
Where else can you get info from people in the know in the middle of the night?

    Thanks again

    Revolution boiler

Phil, One other thing, make sure this boiler has the updated Honeywell aquastat relay on it and not the original Electronic board and sensor for boiler temp control. This boiler had a update kit available for it because of intermittent failure of the electronic board. Although the symptoms you say don't exactly point to this problem.
  • Control Update

What Tim is referring to is a change back in 1999 during the second year of production from an electronic high limit (L7148F) to the standard L8148E control. This nuisance replacement program was instrumented in response to nuisance lockouts in the field due to a possible weak resistor in the L7148F control. If this were the case, the pilot would not light either. Hope this helps.
