I spent 6 hours yesterday getting trained on their new Eschellon controls based system. Any of you wallies got some field experienc with these controls? I must admit, the possibility of looking into a system operation from the internet does hold some appeal...

    Appeal indeed!

    Mark:

Gary Jansen and I are both looking at Caleffi. Lots there to consider. Gary is putting some in now. You might want to check with him and see what he thinks.

    Saw these at a show

They looked interesting but the guy in the booth turned me off big time so I didn't get a good look. Too much of a used car salesman, lots of fluff and no content. Not to mention a realy bad hair piece and I am pretty sure he had make up on. Creepy!

So what are the potential benefits of using these things? How is their support, what kind of company are they, how long have they been around? All of this is important to me, I am a little bit old school I guess.

    control

mark i was lucky enough to sit in on a class given by roger michaud, on there control. i like the user friendiness of the control. also the unlimited number of uses that the control can be used for.

roger is hoping to do a two day seminar this summer, where we can get some hands on. cant wait looks like the control of the future.

    Ted...

They are BIG in Europe. In fact most major boiler manufacturers from Germany use thier products at some point in their product line. They make a plethora of mechanical components, like low loss headers, air seperators, auto vents, pressure reducers, 3 ways etc. I'm not sure how long the control logic has been around, but it is EXTREMELY flexible.

Based on their pitch (biased, obviously) they are a BIG company, producing something like 13,000,000 finished parts last year alone.

Some of the key features of their logic, its a 2 wire parallel, non polarity sensitive bus (stranded 2 wire, 18 ga I beleive), P&I programmable, can be hooked to cable modem and will page you if theres a problem, or you can call it up and adjust and down load history, monitor, heating, cooling, dhw, auxilliary, snowmelt loads, multizone expandable, and on and on...

I must admit, I am impressed, and the cost is right. It would allow you to go into the small building EMS business without having to bust the usual 100,000$ nut to make it profitable. It will also do lighting schedules and card key security in a basic model.

John Siegenthaler spoke about this in one of his articles about web based controls. I get the impression that he's impressed with it.:-)

    Roger...

was our instructor too. Nice guy and VERY knowledgeable.

He used to own Erie Controls before they were bought out by Invensys. He now works solely for Caleffi North America to my understanding.

    caleffi installation

It looks as if I will be installing two boiler systems this summer using the caleffi controls and some of their mechanical appertunances. I, too, attended the Boulder demo by Roger (my second exposure to him and Caleffi) and am still impressed with the possibilities. As far as support, Roger is sending his North America Caleffi controls pro out to look at the first job and make sure we get it right the first time. Caleffi seems very committed to getting their foot in the U.S. with a long term vision in mind. I'll write back in September and tell y'all how it went.

    Supplemental heat source?

Does it sound like the Callefi Control be used to integrate solar or another lower temp. heat source?

    Caleffi

It sounds like something I've needed for a long time.

    http://www.abledistributors.com/hydronic/caleffi_con.html

This was the only reference to Caleffi controls Google could find. I wonder if they'd work on 50 Hz? Can anyone supply an e-mail address for Mr. Michaud?

BMS/DDC controls can control just about anything, the only constraints are the abilities of the programmers and the budget.

    Caleffi Products

Ted: I hope that wasn't me you were talking about. I don't have a hair piece, wrinkled, but don't use make up and more importantly, I love and breathe hydronics and HVAC control.

Please feel free to contact me if you need literature or help with any Caleffi product. We think that the products speak for themselves, and I am personally committed to every contractors' success with our products. I apologize for the used car salesman approach that one of our booth personnel may have used, but believe me, Caleffi is first and foremost an engineering company. We will help you in any way possible because I believe that the more opportunities we bring to the trade, the larger the market segment we create for everyone. You can take a look at our catalog by going to www.caleffi.us and click on application manuals, and if needed, we will supply you with engineering manuals and literature.

    Sincerely,

    Roger Michaud

    I sat through

Rogers presentation at the Madison RadFest, and hovered around the Loveland seminars.

A very energetic and knowledgable control guru, without a doubt!

I liked the fact that he spoke directly to, and looked the seminar-ees in the eye as he spoke. Many seminar speakers or salesman look around or through you! Roger made sure everyone understood the info, and spent time afterwards to share more. Lots of info in a short period of time, an A plus presentation. The controls speak for themselves, this is some "hot" stuff :)

    cool system

I just started installing our first system today. It will control 4 Unicos with A/C and hot water coils, 15 radiant zones, 2 indirects, humidification and dehumidification, 2 boilers. Can't wait to sit in my office and monitor the system over the Net. Hydronically Yours, Gary Jansen

    ME: maybe you want to

do a complete dream hydronics workup

where you have the ultimate Hydronic system with manifolds, heat exchangers, storage, and controls, to connect different heating and cooling sources to different heating and cooling loads year-round

    heating sources :

    ---------------------

    · boilers reg or tankless – diff fuels gas, oil, elec

    · High velocity type bopilrs like pool heaters

    · solar

    · geothermal heat pump

    · mass storage tank

    · heat from snowmelt system in summer

    · heat concentrators (using partially evacuated water tubes, for low temp vapor condensation cycle)

    cooling sources :

    ---------------------

    · liquid chiller

    · cooling from pool jacket

    · storage (hot or cold) tank

    heat exchangers

    -------------------

    · shell tube

    · flat plate

    · freeze protection

    heating loads :

    ---------------------

    · radiant – pex or panel

    · fin coil

    · fan coil

    · heat exchanged types like pool

    · DHW – and spa

    cooling loads :

    ---------------------

    · radiant (60 degree water in ceiling after fan coil has dried the air of course)

    · fan coil (40-45 degree water)

    · pool jacket cooling

    water treatment:

    --------------------

    · anti freeze – makeup systems

    · ph

    · rust/corrosion inhibiters
    · algaecides – bactericides

    · auto pool conditioners

    · whole house potable and drinking water filtration

    Sprinkler system:

    ---------------------

    · Wet type using pex – with antifreeze

    · Dry type electronic or mechanical sensing

    Power Failure Options:

    ----------------------------

every now and then one of us is lucky enough to get a dream house contract – it would be nice to have all the info ready to roll and a base system diagram – since it’s purely hypothetical – we can all stick our two cents in and iron it out until we come up with something we could actually sell – even manufactures could chime in

It would make a nice multi-part series for your column – siggi could even time his articles on section details – not to mention all the software updates he will need to his program, and Dan’da’man can do the book when it’s done, and we have a couple of mansions to showcase - Call it “Modern Hydronics Unleashed”
