CONCORD, N.H. -- The owner of New Hampshire's Mountain View Grand Resort will serve two months in jail, pay a hefty fine and develop an education program after pleading guilty to improperly removing asbestos from his resort.
Kevin Craffey pleaded guilty to two charges of illegally removing asbestos during renovations three years ago. He was sentenced Friday to two months in the county jail, fined $232,000, ordered to develop an educational program for renovators and to complete 150 hours of community service.
Asbestos was commonly used in insulation and fireproofing, but has been found to cause lung cancer. There are very strict regulations for controlling it when renovating old buildings.
Attorney General Peter Heed said the state expects the sentence will be a deterrent and help people understand the dangers of handling asbestos improperly.
Craffey said he regrets not getting proper permits for the asbestos work, was happy to put the issue to rest and looks forward to working with the state on the education program.
