any comments on replacing cast iron radiators with Runtal radiators on a gravity hot water system with new boiler piped in a primary/secondary design with circulators?

I am in the minority on these things...

But I don't care for the cost, the look - or the output.

Unless I was doing an ultra-modern decor - I'd stick with the C.I. Radiation.

Just like your new boiler is [hopefully] sized to the heat loss of the structure, you need to ensure that the panels are sized to the heat loss of the individual spaces.

If you size the panels at the 180° output of the standing iron, they're going to be similarly large and you're almost certain to have to use the convection enhancing models. Particularly if insulation/weatherization has been added the standing iron is likely WAY oversized--particularly on the highest floor of a mult-floor home.

Sizing will involve decisions--aesthetic, budgetary and performance related. TRVs and full reset will be very desirable. Try to use as many of the non convection-enhanced models as possible, but be aware that they absolutely cannot be covered by furnishings, draperies, etc. Panel rads must be considered part of the decor themselves.
