Must have been a fine man to have brought

Darin to the World. My prayers go out to you and yours, my brother. As one of my idols (General Mac Arthur) once said about losing his own parents (to paraphrase): "....it is pain so deep and leaves a void so large, that you truly never recover from it...you just learn to find a place for the hurt and keep on moving ahead in their memory." My best advice, pal, is just let it all hang out now, do your grieving and don't feel one bit funny about it. Eventually, it will find its own place and you will accept it. Just remember the good times buddy. You know where to get me when and if you wanna talk about it. Your Freind, Matt Mad Dog Sweeney

    To All My Friends

Thank You for your thoughts and prayers, they mean so much. My Dad was a big mountain of a man, 6'4 275lb. He had a big heart to match. He was 61 and was going to retire in Jan on his 62 birthday. He had worked at the cement plant in Ravena, NY for almost 42 years. A heavy equipment operator in the Quarry. He operated equipment twice the size of most peoples homes with the finesse of a skilled surgeon. A man who loved his family. My Dad gave me my strong work ethic, no matter how he felt he went to work to provide for his family. It was very hard to go down to my Gram's and tell her about my Dad, her only child. My Gram is 80 and just retired last year, a very strong woman. The people who grew up during the Great Depression have such strength. My Dad started taking me hunting and fishing with him as soon as I was able to walk behind him. Please keep my Mom in your prayers, her world is turned upside down right now. My Mom and Dad were married in 1963. They had met when they were 15 years old. I would like to thank you all again for your heartfelt thoughts and prayers. If not for the Wall I would have never had the priviledge and honour of knowing you all. God Bless.

    Always with you

    Darin,

I lost my Mom in January 2 years ago. This is the third Mother's Day without her and it still hurts.

Just remember that as long as you remember him, he'll always be with you.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

    Jeff

Your Dad was a wonderful person by the sounds of it. My father passed on in 2000 and I still crack a wide grin when I think of him. I do hope the pain of your father's passing slip away soon and that the pain is replace by silly grins ,like I have.

    Sorry for your loss.

You've got it. Sudden loss is shocking and painful. Take the time to remember your Dad, and all the good things he did, and help your Mom to carry on.

You have my deepest sympathy. I lost my Dad 20 years ago and a day dosnt go by that I dont think abut him. He was a great Dad who allways put us first.

The pain never goes away it just becomes easier to deal with, and thats how it should be.

Be strong and remember how proud your Dad was of you and all the joy You gave to Him.

Just wanted all of you to know

Darin showed his family this thread. On Tuesday evening at the wake, his mother and sisters asked me to tell you all how much your kind words meant.

Thank you to all that posted, your prayers DID make a difference, and your posts brought comfort. You guys are the best.

A woman made a statement at Earl Cook's funeral today that made so much sense. She told everyone to stop crying because we were not crying for Earl, rather we were crying for ourselves. That was true.

He was laid to rest today in a beautiful cemetary that has a wonderful view of the Catskill mountains. A woman played a six string guitar and sang a classic christian worship song. Earl's son-in-law played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes. Earl loved the pipes and was so proud that he finally had his own, personal bagpiper.

When I first met Earl, I noticed a look about him. At 6'5" and 275+lbs, he could have been an intimidating man, but Earl Cook had a look in his eye that warmed you from the moment you saw him. I finally figured out what that look was. Earl always looked like he was getting ready to tell you the best joke you ever heard. Quite often, he did.

All of you helped my best friend and his family through the most difficult time of their lives. For that, I am eternally grateful.

What a place Dan has built.

A Very Heartfelt Thank You from My Family

We laid my Dad to rest yesterday in a place that is carved out of the woods and has a beautiful view of the Catskill mountains directly in front of him. Tuesday night at his viewing the line of his friends and family streched out for three and a half hours, a true testament to his character. I cannot tell you the amount of love and sympathy that has poured out. The guys my Dad worked really had such a love for that man. It was hard to see some of these men that I grew up around deer hunting. Many tears were shed. I would like to share something that especially touched me. My Dad worked with a man named Mike DeChek. Mike, I think is my age. He and Dad always made bets about things to compete with each other. On April 29 they made their last bet. My Dad bet $4.00 against Mikes navy belt buckle that he was the best heavy equipment operator. Mikes buckle was one he had made while he was at Subic Bay, Cuba for winning Heavy Equipment Operator of the year Navy Sea Bees 1987. He stuck an envelope in my hand and asked me to open it later, this was in the envelope with a letter from him along with $4.00. He wispered in my ear, "Your Dad was like a father to me." I read that beautiful letter to my family. Being in the service, I know what that buckle had meant to Mike. I am so very proud of my Dad, knowing he had touched people like that. My Mom had asked me to thank everyone on the Wall for all the prayers and thoughts. We had built a big shed out of rough cut lumber last fall my Dad's friend had cut for us. My Dad liked to sit out there and smoke a cigar and have a beer after work. We had built a big wood bin off the side of it. Yesterday we all sat out there drinking some beers, as usual Mark was entertaining us all. I know my Dad was looking down at us smiling, listening to our stories about him. Once again thank you everyone, I cannot tell you how much it has meant hearing from all of you scattered across this Great United States of America. God Bless You All.
