Filling an abandoned underground tank.....
Customer has a 1,000 underground oil tank to be abandoned in place. 60' off of the driveway & they don't want any concrete trucks backing across the yard.
Largest tank opening is 2". No concrete pumping companies in the area & of the ones who are within an hour or two, none want to fiddle with a 2" tank opening - even though it's a slurry & not the thicker concrete.
The tank is in good shape. They switched to nat gas.

I read somewhere
that expanding foam insulation is also used in some places. That uses a small application hose. Probably not cheap. Many tanks have an access hole cut in to clean tank and remove sludge then just backfill with sand/gravel.0 -
Fill with sand
As the other post suggested, pump out the sludge, have a sewer company flush and clean, punch a hole in the bottom is you can, and fill the tank with sand, that way any heavy load in the future won't suddenly drop into the old tank. If you can cut the sod to open up a 2X2 or so access on the top of the tank, the cleaning and filling would be alot easier.0 -
Can a access hole be cut with a sawzall? If so how about a wheelbarrow brigade and a whole lot of pea gravel? If it was me I'd have it dug out and disposed of. Then backfill and reseed.0 -
A grout pump?
These are smaller, pull behind pick up, types of cement pumps. They generally have a discharge hose in the 2" size and can pump a grout mix or a pea gravel mix.
Gypcrete! Troy would pump 1000 gallons
Foam sounds expensive.

abandoning oil tank
I'm pretty sure that in NY part of the estimate for conversion must include an estimate for removal/abandoment of the old fuel tank. I would also immediatly remove the fill pipe(leave the vent) mistakes occur and they wouldn't want an accidental delivery. I would suggest having a reputable environmental firm deal with the tank. In my opinion its best to remove it or if filled make sure its to DEC approval and signed off. If its left in place this will need to be disclosed for the future sale of the property.0 -
Flowable fill
Worked on one job for me. Not sure of the hose size though. http://www.claytonco.com/concretepage/flowfill.html
Good luck

WARNING
If you cut an access with a sawsall, fill er up with H2O to displace fumes...ONE spark and your new career as a human connonball will take off with a bang.
Safety first.
