Tall York replacement , the hard way

under the stairs , where it sat for about 55 years . They stand about 5 1/2 feet tall and weigh around 600 - 700 lbs . The homeowner did not want the back wall cut , so we slid it out through the kitchen .

At least scrap steel prices are high!

... this Yorkie might buy you a beer! I hope you guys will recuperate over the weekend. Cheers!
  • We used the Peerless WBV

Very nice boiler for tight spots . You can see the grooves on the wall that the Tall York made when we yanked it out . Actually , we made it fall onto a 4 inch block of wood because it can't be tilted out of the hole . Luckily we didn't take out the cold water pipe or the radiant feed , which was still connected .

Speaking of the radiant feed , when we come across an original Levitt still pumping floor heat , we look for telltale signs of a leak - rusty boiler water , internal parts corroded , no water standing in the pipes going down . This home had all of it . When we filled the system I cranked it up to 25 lbs . It dropped to 0 psi in about 30 seconds . That aint a hole in a pipe , it's a gushing mess . The homeowner is going to have baseboard heat replace the radiant . It's a shame , but there aint much more you can do to salvage these mass produced 50 year old radiant systems .

    I'm in awe, Ron!

The fact that you can get 5 boilers done in 5 days is awesome enough, but to actually make them look this great, is ......phenominal. I hope your higher-ups appreciate everything you do. And if they don't, move to the lovely Lehigh Valley, PA. Because, I sure would.

Man! Look at all the room YOU got!

The last one we did like that had a hatch we had to crawl in and out of.

We installed a Munchkin with a super-stor under it.

I would post pics, but you can't get far enough away to take one.

    Nice job Ron!

    I just gotta say,

Your "minds eye" and mine, see things WAY more differently.
If I could do that caliber of work in short time, I would be amazed.(I tend to look at an install as, "I'm going to be the next one to service it", so the time frame is a bit longer.) The fact that you ALSO have help, makes things go a bit quicker.I'm jealous!(That they work with you day in, and day out, make things go WAY faster!)

The fact that you do it in such tight spaces is nothing short of AMAZING!

I'm going to be down at Brookhaven on Mon. night. Mr Milne is interviewing a new prospective "heat tech" on Mon. afternoon. He asked me to sit in....but I'm going to be hangin with some great minds of the oil field, and I had to "gracefully decline". (PRIORITIES MAN!) Hope to see you there. Yet again....Nice job! Chris

    Ron Jr.,

Hey Ron, Nice job. I see you are using Riello. How do you like them? We used them some years ago with not so good results. In Levittown, Pa. we have been using Peerless, Burnham, Weil- McLain, Utica and Thermodynamics with Carlin burners with very good results. The customers are very happy with the economy of them. We strive for moving the boilers out to the garages or store rooms which makes it so much easier to service. How do the the local municipalities view the underground tanks? We've been putting more and more above ground, which makes sense in view of the prevailing ecological attitudes. Please advise.
  • I usually install

2 or 3 boilers a week . We also install water heaters , baseboard , oil tanks , A/C , so there is a good variety
during the week . This was a rarity , 5 in 5 days . You know you need a break when you start dreaming about sweating pipes together .

Thank you Heatboy , from seeing the work that you do , your comments make it all worthwhile . Great meeting you in Baltimore .
  • You gotta use the zoom out feature

on the digital for those hard to see places . But I know what you mean , you need a good 5 to 10 feet to take a decent picture of the total job . I'd love to see that Munchkin and Superstor install . Going back there anytime ? Thank you Mark .
  • The art of compromise

When it's gotta be done in one day , we prioritize the 3 main factors - done fast , done neat and made easy to service .

When I first started in the trade , my boss the greatest man I ever worked with , hammered into out psyche that it does not matter how long it takes , just do a picture perfect job everytime . Just to hear his praise that we did a great job would make us forget that we got home around 8 pm every night , he was such a positive force . It's the reason I stayed with him for almost 10 years for a lower salary .

Thank you very much Chris . I'll be out there too for dinner and drinks the night before the seminar . That is a can't miss meeting .
  • Peerless has the tappings

in all the right places - the header is in the back left side which makes the fluepipe a straight run into the chimney without obstructions . And also it is the smallest cast iron boiler in depth that we got , so we can push it back far enough so I could actually stand up in there and pipe the boiler . Thanks Todd .
  • We also try to sell

relocations to the garage , but the cost makes it prohibitive . Our company has been using the Riello for years and find them to be the most reliable burner made . We have recently switched to the Beckett and cover for the Burnham V8 line and I find it to be a fantastic combination and much more quieter than a V8 and Riello F5 ( thanks goes to Charlie Masone of Beckett for showing me firsthand ) . We also use the Burnham RSA line , the Weil Gold , and we used to install the TD-S and CWL series , which are great steel boilers .

With underground tanks - New York State had an incentive program going for a few years . If you replace your underground or above ground tank , you could receive a $500 credit on you state tax . The rebate expired Jan 1 this year , but theres a push to start the program again . A photographer for the New York Times met me last week on a buried oil tank we installed . He took some pictures and said they should be in this Sundays paper . I believe the article is about reinstating the rebates . Thank you Ken .
