We lost an American Superman and Hero today

John R. Hall

I remember hearing about his enlistment while listening to the Jim Rome radio show. I can imagine that Jim has a lot of good things to say about Pat today. Makes you wonder how many overpaid, spoiled athletes would do the same thing. My thanks to his parents for raising a child the right way -- and my sympathies.

In the fight to Rid Afghanistan of Terrorists
Pat Tillman, an All-Pro Defensive back for the Cardinals walked away from millions of dollars a year to serve his country. After 11 Sept 2001, he and his brother, a professional baseball player decided that they needed to serve America in The Elite Army Rangers. After basic, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Pat Was killed in action. He was 27. This man and his glorious brother are THROWBACKS to an era when country came first. What a tough, selfless, courageous and honorable young man. He was a manly man to say the least. Goodbye superman! Your name will forever be synonymous with sacrifice and courage. Mad Dog

But those spoiled guys, like you and me, are still alive. Is there a right way to be dead?
And by the way, the Cheney administration won't let his coffin be photographed because it is bad publicity, even though they didn't hesitate to show a body being carried out of the WTC in their own political ads.

His was an amazing sacrifice...
Actions like that should be the only way athletes can be referred to as "heros".0 -
You just had to do it!
You couldn't let the post just honor an American soldier without starting down the road of political bashing.
Moveon.org has plenty of room for your rant.
Take it there.

Our little town
of 2000 people lost one of our own last night. No sports hero, just a kid who enlisted straight out of H.S. into the Marines. Took shrapnel in the head in Baghdad 4/14.0 -
It's the Selflessness that matters...

It's the Selflessness that Matters...
...not the heroism.
He couldn't stand to see his brothers (literally AND figuratively) die without being in harms' way himself.

Well Said
This is why America Kicks **** and always will! Because we value our Freedom and the Freedom of our children even at the cost of our own lives and dreams. Heart goes out to all our fallen brothers and sisters and to those who are still providing all of us the privelidge of living in America.

You nailed it Mr. Hall
And let us not forget the brother of this Patriot.
They both enlisted after 9/11, both Rangers.
There are no words to express my sympathy, nor my gratitude.

RANGERS LEAD THE WAY !!
Was his death more tragic than the kid up the road in Glens Falls from me, NO ,but he was making many dollars a year and famous from his sport exploits. He still chose service to his country over service to himself. If it pisses people off to give him a extra nod at his death because of that selfless service, TOO BAD. He deserves it. Good thing people did not get a little light in the rectal fortitude say in, the battle of Saratoga,Gettysburg,San Juan Hill, trenches of WW1,D-Day,Khe-Sahn,Grenada,Panama,Desert Storm, or countless other battles where Americans thought that the cause of freedom was worth more than themselves. I wonder what Lincoln thought when battles raged and on one day there were 55,000 letters to write to grieving mothers of why it had to be their child to lay their life upon the altar of freedom. We would not be here now if they had not. IF you think that to capitulate to the terrorists is the answer, then you have dishonoured the memory of these patriots.0 -
I was touched
when I heard the news. That man knew of honor and followed his heart. He's an example to us all, and will live on in our hearts and minds. WW

Oh, I'm sure they will, because as we all know, God Is On Our Side.0 -
Right on, Sir Mike
His death "weighed" the same as a poor kid from the South Bronx, but his decision to "chuck it all" makes him extremely special among his Professional sports peers. Let's not forget the great Ted Williams who signed up for 2 Wars. The big difference is that it was much more commonplace in "The Greatest Generation" for guys to do that. Today it is very rare. Too many young able-bodied American Men are lazy, Selfish, and spoiled. After 11 Sept 2001, I was so sick and disgusted that I just had to do something!!!!!! I found the State Guard as I had a business to run and a family to feed. We do not leave the State or go overseas. It is a way to serve one's country AND run your business. It is neither glamorous nor glorious and takes up a lot of my time. I often feel guilty that I don't do more like fighting alongside a Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. I am almost 37 and had my chance to really serve my country, but I got into plumbing and the rest was history. Guys my age come up to me all the time to thank me. I tell them it is the LEAST I can do, and why don't they consider joining? That's when you lose them: "oh well I'm too busy...I've got to get my boat in tyhe Water this weekend....or I've got a place upstate to work on ..blah blah." They look at Memorial Day as another sale day at The Mall. I have "converted" a few and they now make it a point to come to a parades and bring the kids atleast. These are guys with good jobs that would pay them if they got activated - unlike mine. It doesn't make them bad Americans or anything, but you just see that take freedom for granted. Let someone else do it is their credo. Thank you for your Service Mike. Mad Dog

You are pathetic
You lack the guts to tell us who you really are. And, as usual, you have turned a simple, non-partisan tribute to your own, vicious agenda. Did you notice that I did not accompany the tribute with a Bush Rah Rah speech or anything? It is a shame that The Pat Tillman's and John Q Soldiers of The USA have to die for a ungrateful person like yourself. But That is What America is all about, and sir, I would kill and die for your right to say what you feel.....for some reason though, I have a nagging feeling that you would not do it for me. If Allah can be on their side, I don't see why GOD cannot be on ours??????? Mad Dog

Pat Tillman, RIP
Peggy Noonan wrote an interesting column about Tillman two years ago...
http://opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=110004997
His contribution is no greater than another who also gives his life for our country. Yet, we know his story. Here's a guy whose selflessness makes me feel selfish.
A few weeks after marriage, he enlisted. A few weeks into a multi-million dollar sports contract, he enlisted.
He didn't do it for fame or glory. He wouldn't allow himself to be made a poster child. He went out of his way to avoid publicity, to avoid interviews, to avoid anything besides service.
One could say that Pat Tillman is a remarkable young man and be right. One could say that it's remarkable that the United States still produces Pat Tillmans and be wrong.
We saw Pat Tillmans throughout the day on 9/11. There are other, nameless Pat Tillmans in the field in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hotspots around the world. Thank God for them. And thank God for the few, like Tillman, who highlight the notion of selfless sacrifice.
Fortunately for all of us, Pat Tillman is not an exception, but one of many who are exceptional. When I survey my contributions to the world against their's, I feel petty and small.
Thank God for them. Thank God for all who exemplify the courage, conviction, idealism, and selflessness that's made America the beacon of liberty for more than two centuries. I salute Pat Tillman and his brothers in arms, living and dead.0 -
Thanks
for saying it so well Matt. I feel the same. There are many selfless people in this nation. The freedom we have here is the fuel for a higher state of being that we can all aspire to. It's humbling to see so many great people like Mr Tilman and all of the other heros of our world, and try to find our way to be more like them. WW

These fine young people
These fine young people have been putting thier lives on the line. The year over here (Iraq) has changed the way I have seen these yuong people. The way and as often as they ante up when the fighting starts, never seams stop suprising me. The selfless act of putting themselves in harms way to protect others. I have been trained to such, but have never done so as often and quietly. These are the true heroes. The expeirance has made myself a better person.
The problem is that so few are protecting so many. The Iraqi people are genrally happy we are here for the most part. The real problem is fighters from other countries. These forgen fighters and some small amount ot extremist's are the trouble. The sooner these are controlled and punished the quicker our fine young people can go home.
To all these qreat people serving and protecting freedom, may GOD keep them and protect them. The ones that God has called home have suffered enough. We have been blessed with thier pressants and example of how to live. The Pat Tillman's of this world are few and very far between.God bless them and keep them.
Thanks0 -
A hero.
He was a hero, my thoughts are with his family.
God bless all the people of all the countries who are there.
Regards.
