Insulation

Is 1/2" or 1" insulation the best choice? Does the insulation have to hug the pipe closely? Can I add insulation to any pipe I can find in my one-pipe system? Does it matter how "fresh" the insulation is? I bought some at HD which seemed ok until I got some from General Insulation. The HD stuff was obviously old and the adhesive wouldn't hold it closed (GI sold me some super tape which did the trick).

Insulation
I would go with the 1" insulation . It 's ok to loose , air space is also a insulation. Age would not matter , even fresh stuff will age on the pipes . I would listen to the guys that make the stuff . You will see a world of difference once you reinsulate your steam pipes...0
