I was right to worry about my boiler

But im not going to complain. Had the gas company over yesterday to replace the gas meter. If you have read my other posts on the plumber that owned my house before I bought it, this will come as no suprise. Back to tyhe story. Anyways new meter installed after 30 minutes and the gas company is ready to fire up the boiler and HW tank for me. He comes into my small one floor house ( boiler room is my porch ) and his CO detector starts beeping like crazy. Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, livingroom all read 110 parts per of CO. open came the windows and doors. Fired the hotwater tank. It was good. Fired the boiler and the co detector started going off again. The boiler was venting CO out of the front. took the small front panel off and the inside was covered in black soot. The heat exchanger is plugged up. Well they shut the gas off to the boiler and tagged it. Have a plumber coming over this morning to clean and inspect it. Im going to see if I can get out of work for a few minutes today and get some pics for you guys. Im just glad that the problem was caught before it killed us. Going to get a CO detector today. It will keep us alot safer. The guy that looked at the boiler said that he doent think that it has ever been cleaned.

    Thank God

You are one lucky fella. Now you will see the importance of both the CO detector and having preventive maintenance performed annually.

Just got back from the house.

boiler was bad enough they decided to yank it out and take it down to the shop to take it apart. Went to move the dryer and noticed that the venting was rotten ( Plastic stuff ) and patched up with duct tape. Im going to fix that before they put the boiler back in. Sorry that I couldnt get any pics of the boiler apart.

    CO-AGAIN??

This is a gas boiler?? Only three ways I know of to create soot, incorrect gas pressure, blocked flue, or lack of combustion air. Before you get sold a bill of goods, either get one of the contractors listed here or keep notes as to what the new contractors recommendations are and come back and we'll kick around the findings. Why did the Co alarm go off after a meter was installed. I find this curious, If the boiler sooted up installing a new meter has no bearring on the CO.....Very Interesting...Hire wisely....Robert O'Connor/NJ

The gas meter was being changed because it was old and it was booked in to be replaced. The gas company had the Co detector on his person when he came into the house to relight the boiler and hot water tank. only after he was in the house for about a minute the detector started going off. At this moment the boiler and hotwater tank hadnt even been light yet. The readings of 110 were left over from before he shut the gas off to install the new meter. The gas company doesnt service boilers so there was nothing in it for him. He just shut the gas off once we found that it was the boiler causing the Co and told me to get it fixed. The fins on the heat exchanger are pluged solid. and there was about 2 cups of grey powdery stuff in the piece between the vent going out of the house and the boiler. Sorry that I dont know the tec. terms and names for it.

So you have a condensing gas boiler?

That was SCALE in the Flue. Your flue gas Temp. is too cool.

    Boiler is back in

And there is no longer any co. Plumber said that the reason that the boiler was so sooted up was because the boiler only fires when the t-stat is calling for heat. Hence a cold start up. I noticed that the boiler temp drops to between 120 - 130F. When the t-stats call for heat the boiler fires and the boiler runns at 180F until the call for heat has ended. The boiler then shuts down and waits for another call of heat. Is there a way so that the boiler runs at a higher temp when the t-stats arent calling for heat? This way stopping the cold start that the boiler is experiencing now?

    Dryer vent caused the problem...

If there is ANY sort of dust, lint etc in the air, it will foul the combustion process and you'll be back to square one in a short period of time.

Replace the plastic flex vent with real sheet metal vent, tape all the joints and be thankful that you are alive...

    If the boiler

fires up to 180 degrees and stays there until the thermostat is satisfied, either the boiler is oversized or you have a circulation problem.

First thing I'd do is perform a heat-loss calc on the house, then compare it to the boiler's rating.

    Question

I must ahve missed something here. The Gas Co picked up CO before they lit the appliances? What's wrong with this picture?
