outdoor wood boiler

Does anyone have the link to the site that sells outdoor wood fired boilers that look like a shed? I saw it on "THE WALL" a few months ago and someone I know in PA. is very curious about it. I also met someone that has one and only spent $17 all winter on propane to heat a 3500 sq. ft. house...Stoked it about every 20 hours...Not bad if you have plenty of wood...and a willing wife or kid to stoke it when you are out at work...Thanks

Lots of choices
I sell the AquaTherm brand. It is a pressurized version, available sheltered or un-sheltered. Actually I sell mainly un-sheltered, most folks can build a shelter cheaper than buying it sheltered. www.aqua-therm.com
I saw a great wood burner at the RPA Rad Fest this past weekend. A wood gasification unit. Burns much hotter and cleaner than regular outdoor units. Less smoke and higher efficiencies. The gases burn in the lower chamber at 1200°
Not sure they have their distribution worked out yet, however.

Gasification
Hi Hotrod, Gasifiers under many different brand names have been popping onto the market since the 1920s. They work great out of the box but are ONLY for those who are really serious about cleaning their systems. Wood is a difficult beast to burn cleanly. Forced fire at 100% output into a dump zone, high volume buffer etc. can work to sustain secondary combustion of the gasses. Don't let your fire slow down. Enjoy......Dan

HS Tarm
Dan, Have you used the HS Tarm gasification wood boiler? I have never had the opportunity to install one yet. We were going through a phase with a lot of people asking about them. I have read that to get maximum efficiency, you have to burn it flat out. Then put the btu's into a heat storage tank. But alot of the other wood boilers have a small water content and no heat storage tank. They also smolder the fire down, making it very inefficient and dirty. Just curious to see what you would consider one of the good ones out there. The one thing people should realize is that they are not just buying a heating system, they are buying a way of life.0 -
Garn Wood Boilers
Our Viessmann Rep put us on to this boiler. Looks to be a very, very, high water volume, heavy-duty woody.

They seem to have a great engineering department and a proven track record. Expensive?...Yup!
Would like to hear if anyone has had experience with this beastie. We have none. Yet.

Funny, isn't it?
Viessmann sells a much larger scope of products in the EU than over here. For example, take the Vitolig series that burns wood in cord or pellet form. Not available over here, just like a lot of their other things. The sulfur content in our wood must be higher ;-)

You are correct, Dan
a bit more attention to wood dryness and ash removal. Check out the video at their website. That lower chamber burns very hot and seems to produce a lot less ash than regular burners.
They also make some real small sizes so you are more apt to burn hotter than the grossly oversized outdoor units that smolder all day.
The price seems attractive on this brand, considering the tech, and componentry. They are adament about return water temperature protection also.

Nice machine
That sure is a tight fuel spec.

I have an outdoor Boiler
go to www.centralboiler.com. Their burners in the right condition will get you up to 3 days of burn time in 20 below weather. They have various sizes. I just wish I could get mine tied to my existing radiator system correctly so I don't have such cold water going back to the unit. I can tell you quite a bit about them, they seem to be a pretty knowledgeable company when it comes to outdoor boilers.0 -
I'd get a second opinion
on some of the radiant designs offered by various wood boiler companies.
A heat loss calc and proper design is ALWAYS required!
This article, in an engineering journal! mentions some loooong loop lengths, and a seemingly small amount of tube for the size home they are heating?? If I read it right :)I'd question some of their other sizing info, also.

Storage Tank Sizing
Storage Tank Sizing for Wood Boilers.
Need some help here.
Tarm has the following storage tank recommendations - For the model 30 gasifier (100 Mbtu) - 600 gallons, for the model 40 (140 Mbtu) 800 gallons.
BTU=heat required to raise 1 lb. of water 1 F.
There is 8.6 lb/gal. So in a gallon of water over a Delta T of 20 degrees there is only 172 BTUs?
So in a 800 gallon storage tank there is only 138 Mbtu stored (DT=20)?
