I see by the photos at Wet Stock that many of you have beards, I have turned down a employment offer about a year ago because I wasn't going to break a long time tradition and cut my beard off...Today I spoke with the same employer and we had the same conversation on beards and he pointed my attention to a paper Charlie G. wrote on beards and who woman in general get bad vibes with techs with beards..Does anyone here have similar policys?

And Homeowners, are you uncomfortable with techs and beards?

    after lunch

only if we can tell what they ate for lunch by whats left in their beard!. other than that I don't see any issues with Beards.

then again I'm still trying to figure why my boss won't hire blondes in the office.

    cheers!

It depends on the beard. There are respectable (trimmed, edged) beards and then there are wild-man beards.

    Comfort factor...

Bud, it really depends on whether the tech is male or female. L

It's not just an \"appearance\" issue...

there are good reasons not to wear a beard. If your job requires the use of a chemical cartridge or filter respirator to protect you against gases, vapors or particles, facial hair makes an airtight seal from the respirator facepiece to your skin impossible, so you can be unprotected. It's slighlty less an issue if you use a compressed breathing air system like a Scott Air-Pak, since there is a positive pressure in the facepiece, but you will lose air faster.

Beards and hair are also flammable, especially the longer they are, something to think about in an industry where we work around gas and oil burning equipment and use torches plus there is also a risk of beards or long hair getting caught in power tools or other equipment. BTW, I've had a mustache for 30+ years, so don't think I don't understand how you feel! Be safe out there.

    Proper trim and length

are the two important factors about a beard's appearence. I have had my full beard since 1980 and I only made the mistake of shaving it off once. My dog hid and my wife told me I would have to rent a beard until mine grew back. I was amazed at how ugly I had become in the years since I had last seen my freshly shaven face. Any way I am destined to go to my last breath wearing a beard.

    Thats just it!

The word beard shakes alot of people up.(BEARD) Lennon had a beard. Daby Hayes had wiskers. Isn't it strange how the other members of ZZ-TOP have beards but not Beard himself...I think I'll retire and use some NAIR, do you care??.....Robert O'Connor/NJ

    i have a beard,

but keep it close cropped..it works in my favor,,here 's why...its got alot of gray in it..customers equate gray hair to tech wisdom..not saying its true..just perception..they think i'm older and wiser than i am.

    From A HO

I don't go by the beard when I hire a company to do service my house or do work. I go by the COMPANY! If the guy in the beard shows up at my house and represents his company in the proper way that is what I am looking for. What I mean is that he respects my house by:
-wiping his feet on entry of my house
-parking in the street not my driveway so when I get home from work I see a truck in the driveway and then "I" park in the street.
-When the tech has all parts on site.
-When the tech has great troubleshooting skills.
-Most importantly when he finds the root problem and solves it so his company does not have to come back 1 week later cause the main issue wasn't found and taken care.

But I also agree your image is representing the company you work for and as long as your tame and no ZZ Topping it out you should be ok.

    Hey!

    I resemble that remark (:-o)

My general disdain for "suits" aside (being forced to wear one for ten years in another life), there are beards, and then there are b e a r d s.

I think it is rather ludicrous

As long as the beard is not wildly out of control, who cares. I have a bigger problem with neck and facial tattoos, nose and eyebrow rings. If someone is intimadated by a beard, I think they have their own insecurities. Don't get me wrong, I prefer clean cut, short-haired employees and its "nice" to have the same types working in your own home. However, some of the finest craftsman and human beings I have known are Long-haired, full of tattoos, and down right mean looking. I worked with a 350lb Hell's Angel on a job once - an electrician. Out of all the other electricians on the job, he was the most neat and meticulous, and well-mannered. I belive in giving everyone a fair shake - despite apperances until they prove otherwise. I had to grow a beard

when I started this career. I had such a baby face when I was 21, I had to grow one just to look older and more experienced. I keep it neat and trimmed, nothing on the vertical of my neck, and I've never had a problem.

Besides, if I hadn't grown a beard, I wouldn't have my wife and four wonderfull kids. My wife wouldn't have looked at me twice if I was clean shaven (she loves men with beards).
