Radiant w UniBox -PGP

...a neat project renovating cast iron radiators and CI convectors. Three bathrooms were remodeled and given radiant floors. We used Wirsbo QuickTrak panels and Oventrop "UniBox" controls to mix the radiator temps down without having to install additional mixing valves or piping. All we had to do was re-route the existing radiator supply and return to the Unibox, and the start of the QT panel. A Viessmann Vitogas 100 is the heat source, V300-79g DHW Tank with recirc. Vitotronic 200 control and a pressure bypass differential installed on the outlet of the 26-64 Grundfoss pump.

    Oventrop Unibox

I get the boxes from my distributor--Blueline Supply, in Jackson Hole WY. (Chris Rorke)The usit I use has a TRV and sensor head with limiting valve. This allows temperature and flow changes to "fine tune" the output. Wayyy cool!!

Did you get the Rads from the same distubuter , what was the name brand of the Rads They look great , We are going to look at insolating our piping in the future for stand by loss , was lookng at the loss calculations for pipe at John Seg site and it could add up to a segnifigent difference over time , met one of your guys at the viessman course in vancouver didnt get much time to speak to him though Say Hello to Eric for me please NRon

    Rad, et al

The radiators are Burnham "slenderized" with Oventrop or Danfoss TRV's. This was Eric's first attempt at doing most of the piping. I'll tell him you said hello...

    Speaking of Euro Tech..........

I about became ill while talking to a customer this past week. He asked me for a quote on a Vitodens because he wanted to compare it with the local plumber's number. Turns out the distributor is selling the HO the Vitodens direct and recommended that he get in touch with this retired guy to install it.( Nothing against retired people mind you, I hope to get that way myself when I hit 90 )

When I learned this tidbit of info I asked a few questions about how exactly it was going to be installed and that's when the faint feeling hit me.

Two temp system with RFH in a slab for the bottom floor. BB for the upper level and from the lineal feet/heat loss numbers I gather that the BB is sized for 190 to 200* water. Along with this, the HO has a 3 1/2 ton soapstone wood heater on the bottom level to complicate things. The lower level is roughly 1,100 sq ft and is to be divided into 3 zones. The second level is split into two but I have a gut feeling that the heat from the soapstone burner is going to do all the heating for the upstairs as it is positioned right in front of the open stairwell. On top of all this, the system is to be controlled by on/off type thermostats driving a circ for each zone.

Howzat for typical Non-Euro engineering? It's about the diametric opposite of the way Viessmann wants that boiler to operate.

    It happens...

...that the equipment sometimes gets into the wrong hands for applications that won't quite do it justice. This stuff is not for beginners. Or those who don't have the training. That's not to say someone who reads instructions may get it right, but who reads anymore? OK, I'll be quiet.
