steam pipes in garage

I have steam pipe that goes through the garage and tees off so there is a steam pipe going to each radiator. This was an addition that was put over the garage. Right now the pipes are wrapped with asbestos. Since it's a long run these are always the last radiators to heat up. Should I wrap these pipes some more to keep the steam from condensating in cold weather? If these were hot water pipes I'm sure they would freeze. Is there sometime type of insulation that would do the trick, or is it not worth it? It seems to me that steam would condensate the minute it hit those cold pipes. Ed

    The radiators will heat faster

if you install a properly-sized main vent on this main. If there is none you will have to drill and tap the pipe at the end, and have the asbestos removed from the area where you're going to drill.

You should, for safety sake, have the asbestos removed. IF in good condition, have it encapsulated. It's a great insulator. I would, because of all the activity in a normal garage, cover the insulation with a PVC jacket to protect it from "bump" damage. But this is a job for a professional. It will cost a little more than doing it yourself (DON"T TOUCH THE ASBESTOS), but it will get done right. Use 1" thick fiberglass if re-insulating.
