Smell at high temperature
has been an issue with rubber tube in general. Reset controls would help lower the temperature, most of the time.
Might try running it even hotter for a few days to maybe cook out the smell. I have had this method work with tar paper under hardwood.
Sure would be nice to have transfer plates for an application like that, wouldn't it! Maybe be able to lower the operating temperature to 140 or 150°

Smell?
No smells here. Never had a complaint yet except when purging. The water runing through that new hose creates some some nasty love canal kind of refinery smell after your done, the smells gone... Robert O'Connor/NJ0
