Hi everyone Iwas reading a pamplet on instalation instuctions on barometric draft controls and it stated that the adjusting weight should be set on the left side for horizontal pipe and on the right side for vertical pipe and i must say i saw a few of these in the wrong place today. When i asked the guy thats trainning me he replied,"what the ---- are u talking about"? Is this really important, if so can u guys tell me why?

    Weight position

Changing the side the weight is on changes the sensitivity of the damper to draft. When air is rising up or vertical the damper reacts with the most sensitivity and opens with minumum draft changes(.005"WC). When the air or draft is moving horizontal to the blade of the damper it is less reactive(.01"WC) and needs to be more sensitive. Does changing the side the weight is on, affect operation? Most weights come from the factory on the right side so if it is not moved this just causes some additional flue loss and efficiency decrease assuming it was set up correctly in the first place. If the weight is moved to the horizontal side on a vertical installation, the damper will open too far and bring in too much room air and cause a reduction in over-fire draft. This could lead to a smokey burner.

    You're 110% right Steamhead

and please also make sure that the manual is the one for THE equipment in use. There is NO one set of rules for everything out there and it will even change within many OEM's catalogs, FACT!
