Heat-Way
Black with a Oxy barrier, I know it well. It all works as far as the installs I've done as well as me own house. More expensive than most. Very good for staple up jobs......Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -
I'm with Robert
I've used Onix since it became available. Great stuff.
The Pex is is a bit stiff when compared to Wirsbo, but I have used it as well.
Dan and Mike Chiles are fantastic people and they have surrounded themselves with some of the brightest minds in the industry.
If you ever get a chance to play golf with Russ Rose, keep an eye on him. He cheats!

Heatway is no longer Heatway. The company has been purchased by Watts and is now called Watts Radiant. I sell Watts Radiant and know many of the prople that make up Watts Radiant. They are a great group of people and make a great product. The history of Heayway is they came out with a product called Entran or Entran I. They has ZERO problems with Entran. Goodyear came along and said that they could make the Entran for them for less $$$. The quality of this product put them out of business. The product Entran II that was made for Heatway by Goodyear was very poor quality. (Don't buy Goodyear tires if you care about quality). Anyway, after they started having problems with Entran II that was made for them by Goodyear, they went back to the original manufacture that made the Entran I for them and called it Entran III. Now they have been making a product called Onix. Onix is great stuff and I have personally been selling it for over 6 years and i have seen ZERO problems with it. It is flexable, staples up quick, ( Irecomend using PEX in a slab just because is cost less and you usually have lots of room to work with when you have a slab). The PEX is made by Uponor (?Spelling) and it is "hush hush" now but they are building a plant to make there own PEX in Springfield, MO as we speak. Dayton made the Entran I and the Entran III and the Onix for Heatway and THERE HAS BEEN ZERO PROBLEMS WITH ENTRAN I, III AND ONIX. The next time you fill up your car look at who made the hose for the gas pump. If it is a Goodyear hose it is usually cracked and you can see the threads exposed. If it is a Dayton hose you will see that it is a much nicer hose with no defects. If you support Watts Radiant you are supporting a great company that stood by the industry and shelled out a lot of personal money out of there ocets to try to make things right. They could of just wend "belly up" and took the money and ran. But they did not. Great company, great people, great product and the best sizing software in the industry. There, hows that. Come to the Vermont EXPO at F.W. Webb in Barre Vermont on May 6th and meet the people from Watts Radiant. Oh ya, Dan Holohan will be speaking about Your a peeing heating systems too from 10:30 to 12:30.0 -

Russ Rose is exceptionally good at it though.(He says he marks all of his golf balls with "Top-Flite", been playing with the same ball for 37 years!)
How long have you lived in Alaska, and, where in Alaska do you live?
I'd like to hear more about the systems that are most commonly installed there as well as the equipment available.
Been meaning to ask you these questions for a while now.

Thanks for the Info
Thanks Bill and everyone else, I really appreciate your insight. I have been interested in trying a Onix installation for quite some time and think I will try a couple this summer. Just so much conflicting information out there between manufacturers is kind of hard to sift through the bull.
Thanks,

Watts radiant...
been doing my taxes today and came across my watts radiant book.ehmmm program..oops.:) I have to give a sorta quick answer as to what we have here, lets see we have a heck of alot of forced air and a heck of alot of boilers, just about zero heat pumps some geo (Hot springs) very little solar and very little wind....not too many fuel cells and not too many eco green buildings..in this area we currently have a few alternatives wood, multi fuel tarns, nat gas in places ,electric, propane, oil and in about that order of useage.nat gas in our area has probably out distanced electric boilers and electric heat .alot of people like the idea having some electric around just in case the oil runs out and it might be a while....on the close to home and near friends...we are predominantly into boilers.most of which are oil. two years ago my buddy dave and i had lashed up probably !/2 of all residential natural gas in the area.the past couple(few) years i've been so buzy with new construction in the hills of yuppy dom that i've only installed a hand full of natural gas boilers, natural gas isnt Laid on everywhere here, as our service is a relative ly new type deal... our boilers readily available are sorta limited to strong iron and steel.., and perhaps some creative Flash propane lash ups in the country however a flash system is likely to die early here in the extremes. we have lots of slantfin, weilmclains, burnhams, buderas, viessman some peerless, hb smiths, kiwanee, american standard, sears, and a host of other oldtimers that have refused To Die:)oh i forgot to mention coal and there are steam exchangers in parts of the city,....now that i think abou it:) i've been about for around 36 + years..arrived from Bermuda jan 15 th 1968 . ... .... ._ !it was cold when i landed here!:) ...oh the control side of the boilers...there is a wide spectrum burners..,zones,pumps valves and fancy doodads...:)for many years i was into service work so ive seen the best an the brightest lash ups...there are old steam boilers with fancy ideas and gizmoes people invented outa necessity round here:) now a days i stick to new construction and occasional service work mostly for people that really need the help and or to share a few laughs and experiences with my friends...there are some really mind boggeling lash up by renta drunks or somekinda idiot with ambition that are way oof the charts...mostly my buddies say Man you gotta see This one! )))) then too ,we have some d ee daid mahn hea too ...these speak volumes to attest to straight thinking.once a guy asked me to come give him a bid to replace his boiler and system and i refused. no way should this work be torn out.this is an example of every kind of right standard and function. what is the beef with it i ask the guy well its Old...so What ?i ask well ...some body told me that there are new more efficent boilers... compared to what? i ask? well the systems Old..So what there arent any leaks.by the way I've seen the other guy s work who was chirping up efficentcy...I'm Not Impressed. That why i called you he says,ok so now you have my opinion on the matter:) this is a work of art and you could charge a fee just to look at it! why ruin it.this lash up could Make you money! people dont do this any more and i wont destroy this. so:) some day some young guy will walk into the boiler room and go WOW!And be lost in a meditative state...... go out and do right:) hey maybe its still there:)0 -

We did a staple up installation last year utilizing the Onix tubing. Application tempeture is at 170. Problems is that the homeowner has complained of a smell.
Watts radiant told us that this would disapate over the course of 2 weeks. We even "cooked" the tubing to get rid of the smell "basically raised the water temp higher".
We still have a probolem with the smell and have not gained any ground with the customer. Customer is happy with the level of comfort. Just the smell issue that we can't get rid of. Please advise if you have experienced any problems0 -
Jim its called Out gassing
it drives the Chemicals from all the materials with in a building, with ever new materials the single manufacturer has made the product with the least amount of chemical annoyances as possible however the combined effect of glues binder plastics sealants paints are seldom if ever part of the test . here is a Trick i use on base board or staple ups, after i am sure the system is running fine i put it through its paces,on this note i will say the painters and sheetrockers have already fricked with it during the construction process leaving it turned off disconnecting the temp limiting construction t statts ,and i have already tested the high side temp ranges to drive out some of the glue in the osb tji bci whatever,...after they are all out i jack the heat up a full day with the windows slightly cracked, some times the out gassing is so severe that it burns the eyes on the second floor any way then i open all the windows and doors and flush the system out(the entire home)..until the temp drops way way down on the system as low as it can cruise,if it seems objectional to me i crank it back up again and leave it like 85 90 until someone like the GC drops by and lets the heat out of the windows or the occasional finish carpenter tweaking some minor technicalities.or sheet rocker or painter...our whole crew KNOWS that I do this so they realize i want the outgassing removed from the home prior to occupantcy. because like i say I am not aware of a out gassing simulation programe that takes into account every possible material some manufacturer produces and thier combined chemical constituencies when mixed in an enclosed area.and while i have seen some stabs at that idea they certainly arent all inclusive as it were.....so this isnt terribly scientific however CYOA is about all we can honestly do in this day and age....Were i you i think that id explain the value of having the home owner take a sabbatical for a weekend the second he and his family are out the door crank the heat up to 90 make sure his pet parrot aint around to babble company secrets when he gets back:)) turn the Hrv off during the processes . crack all the windows open,go have a cup of coffee on me:) next morning see if you can understand That smell... is what the people are subjected to every day of thier lives and though in small doses it is as objectionable to them as it is to you in that instantce in time....oki so now its day two...open the portals:) crank up the box fans drive the stuff out! let the heat keep running at high after another coffee break out side the place come back in and crank all the windows and doors shut and crank heat to it for about 4 more hours with the box fans running.... when you get back open the windows again lower the temp to like 56 round up the box fans ,turn the hrv on high and leave... the people will come back think wow it seems ALOT BETTER feel a little chilly turn the t stats on whatever they usually have them set at turn the hrv settings back down to thier normal comfort refresh rate and wonder what you did to make it better. like i say it is the combined outgassing of products .it is a grey area of just who is the respondent ...i take it as part of my job however , really ,the GC should be the one footing the Bill ..my buddy always sees the validity of this procedure and he is now trained to leave the t stats settings alone and to run through the process ,i'm hoping he understands the problem thouroughly by now so i can divest myself of the extra time loss doing this on every new home.0
