Jaybee, are you doing mostly oil? ..........

Rule of thumb, Single stage will be first choose 99% of the time, when vacuum is under 6" using 3/8" line under 50'. Longer than that use 1/2" this will give you 100' in length. The above can also be used for underground or tank below burner.By using a Tigerloop you can still use single stage 99% of the time. Two stage is for high lift = pulling more than 6" of vacuum. Try to avoid two stage pumps and two pipe systems at all costs due to most filters can't keep up with what the pump can move and most oil leaks (spills) are due to bad return lines. The reason I say try to avoid a Suntec model A pump will move 17 gph of oil, if you only need 1 gph the other 16 is going thru filter, at that rate is won't be long before you can clog up a filter. Hope this helps John@Reliable

Good place to go for Oil Heat knowledge.

Jaybee, just for your knowledge in case you not aware of it, there is a wesite dedicated to oil heat. The address is www.oiltechtalk.com. It has been created and is hosted by a wonderfull generous man and fellow Wallie named Alan Mercurio. There is a discussion board there just like The Wall, where many great oil heating minds hang out that would be more than happy to show you the right way to service oil burners.

Also, if you click on "The Store" link, you can get a book written by Alan called Carry the Torch. This book has many excellent answers about oil buner service, including the answers to all your questions about when to use a Single Stage or Two stage pump, and for $15, you can't go wrong.

There's also many other oil heat books at Alan's store, many of which are written by George "Firedragon" Lanthier, another excellent and experienced Oil Man. You can also check out his website at www.firedragonent.com.

Hope this is helpfull, and keep reading those books. I can already see that your better than your co-workers. Keep it up.

    Glenn

    Don't get discouraged

Don't get discouraged, I don't know how old you are, or how long you have been doing it, but i was in your boat not too long ago. When i started I was 22, and i became employeed with a big company. Our "head tech" wasn't very keen on a "young punk" like myself becoming a tech. He bashed me and discouraged me all the time. Now, after a year and a half, I feel i know as much, if not more, from reading books, manuals, magazines, whatever i could get my hands on. Also, going on call in november in Northern New York, taught me a lot quick. Now i can diagnose, install service, whatever. just remember, if you go on a call, it was broken when you got there, if you use your head and are safe, you can't make the situation much worse. Just keep reading and trying. I found after my second winter, which is wrapping up (if winter ever wraps up up here) i am more confident than ever. Just don't be scared to try.
