Heating Domestic Hot Water off Steam Boiler

FAC
FAC Member Posts: 1
I need to replace a stand alone, Nat Gas, 40 gal HW heater.
One of the options is to use the existing steam boiler as the replacement (ie, new taps).

Has anyone ever done this? My concern would be quantity of available hot water for showers. I have a multifamily (I live in the back) and there are 4 adults, 1 teenager that take showers. Am I better off with a stand alone unit or would the boiler suffice?

    indirect off a steamer

how efficeint is the steam boiler? there are a few options for you. If you can get a supply tapping into the boiler below the water line you will be set to go. Is there a blank coil plate? Leave your posting up, you will recieve plenty of ideas. Piping the supply and return into the boiler and having a strainer in the supply b4 the indirect will take the some planning. Ask for a piping suggestion from the SLANT FIN guy who checks in here.

    Hot Water off Steamer

I have a tankless coil on my steamer AND a separate stand alone HW heater. I re-piped the whole thing with 3/4 pipe and six different ball valves set up in such a way so that I can get hot water:
1.) Only from the tankless; or
2.) Only from the HW heater; or
3.) From the tankless first, then into the HW heater as a holding tank (which is where I typically leave it set)
In the winter, when the steamer is always running anyway, I get my water only off the tankless (HW heater is shut off). But, if I have house guests and worry about running out of HW I will simply kick on the HW heater too and have never run out. If I ever need to shut the steamer down for service or whatever (or if I run out of oil) I can simply continue to get HW off the HW heater. I like the versatility of this system, although it may be too much trouble for the average homeowner.
