Marketing with Bob Dylan

I was amazed to see a recent ad featuring Bob Dylan and Victoria's Secret lingerie. Can you believe it? Bob Dylan endorsing panties???? The sound track to the ad was "Love Sick" from his '97 album. He doesn't say anything in the ad, but in the background, the lovely nymphets cavort like angels in next to nothing.
One reporter said: "What would you rather have Bob Dylan selling, ladies' underwear or cat food?"
What is the true meaning of this?

For Dylan, the times are really a-changin'

In one of the strangest marriages of art and commerce imaginable, Bob Dylan, the poet laureate of the counterculture, an icon of hip detachment, is shilling young women in lingerie. Dylan appears in the ads, which debuted Tuesday during "American Idol" and will run on "The O.C.," "Will & Grace" and other shows in 15-, 30- and 60-second versions. The ads use Dylan's song "Love Sick" from 1997's "Time Out of Mind." Dylan appears in black shirt and white tie; model Adriana Lima appears in bra, panties and high heels. "We asked and he agreed," said Ed Razek, chief creative officer for Victoria's Secret. "I can't speculate as to his reasons, but I would not guess money is a large motivator for him at this point." Razek said the amount of Dylan's fee is confidential. Dylan was unavailable for comment. But at a press conference way back in 1965, he was asked if he would ever sell out to commercial interests, and reportedly deadpanned, "Women's undergarments."

I didn't know that. So he has been true to his principles all these years!

Big Bob has also been singing his heart out the last few years---the voice is going but the passion is back. He does nearly a hundred concerts a year, he's always on the road, although indeed he can't need the money.

Maybe he wants to check if every hair is numbered by examining the Victoria's Secret models.

    Quiznos

Speaking of Quiznos, visit their Web site and click on the commercial. It is the rage at our kid's elementary school. It is so stupid that it is funny -- appealing to the superior intellect of moi.

    $$$

Neil Young is in a recent Rolling Stone posed with some bio-diesel product he uses in his tour bus.

Road and Track claims the Lead Zepplin/ Caddilac ads are their most sucessful ad campaign ever.

I suppose with all the downloadable music these days the artists need to look for other income sources :)

Rock on, the baby boomers are spending :)

An uncle Bobby song appeared here in Canada some years back for the Bank of Montreal. He was not direstly in the commerical but his song was,"Times they Are A Changin". For the use of the song he received 7 million....not bad at all for stuff he wrote some 35-40 yrs ago

Yeah, he looks better than he did ten years ago and sounds as bad. I like that he's recording and touring with vigor. He was and always will be a vital artist.

Heck, Sting wound up with a no.1 hit with a song that previewed on a car commercial way before it was released on CD.

The BIG news is when Zeppelin finally caved and "sold their soul" to Cadillac. As they say....everything's for sale at the right price.

Just "vital artist"? In most lists and surveys he's #2 in the greatest rock singers/bands of all time. But the Beatles (#1) are long departed; the Rolling Stones (#3) have become a Rolling Stones Tribute Band; while Mr. Zimmerman keeps drastically reinventing his old songs (have you heard him sing 'Tambourine Man' lately?), writing and singing new ones (some great, some not so great), and behaving in every way like he wants to die in his footsteps.

So OK, doing Victoria's Secret ads is a bit silly. I think he's just flattered to be seen as an icon. It's not going to help him get the Nobel in literature, though.

Dylan selling underwear is an ominous sign. If we see Holohan hawking heat pumps, you know the end of world is at hand. REPENT!!
