It is probably a campaign finance disclosure law, but I think it stinks. Well, my neighbors know where I stand, I never hid my political leanings, but that is my personality. I don't like it aa all, John. Mad Dog

Not really an invasion of privacy...

    ...in my mind at least.

As I understand constitutional law, political donations are considered to be a form of "speech" protected by the first amendment.

If you are willing to speak, it is implied that you are willing to be heard by anyone who wants (or cares) to listen.

Remove this connection with speech and you are no longer giving your opinion--you are buying hidden favor!

Just like with "real" speech however, there are some limits. It's illegal to yell "fire" when no fire is there because panic and injury as likely to ensue. Extremely large political donations are considered to be similar and are not allowed.

Unfortunately though, the "speech" thing has been applied to non-people, e.g. corporations through so-called "political action committees". THIS is what should be COMPLETELY ILLEGAL. A corporation is NOT a person!!!!!!!!! Corporations can effectively coerce employees to contribute to MULTIPLE causes to which they do not personally agree and the speech is no longer "theirs".

Sorry. Mr Mike But I disagree

I think it goes just a little too far. Should it be public record what you buy at the grocery store too, or the books you buy? Tv program you watch? What teams you root for? Citizens deserve a littl eprivacy, even when making political donations. Mad Dog

They sure are some eye openers! I do think it is a bit personal. I fooled with it, only to find out some info that I wish I hadn't... Robert O'Connor/NJ

    Understand your point

(and even sort of agree) but the alternative of allowing large, undisclosed political donations seems somehow much worse...

I believe this info has LONG been considered public--it's just that the internet makes access much easier than before.
