Lining Chimney

If I switch from an two 82 yr old coal/oil conversion steam boilers, to two Burham Independace gas fired steam boilers how will I know if the exisitng masonry chimney needs to be re-lined. The house next door, which is identical, had this conversion done many years ago wothout a liner. But what determines wheather you need relining? I alredy own 5 burnham steam units in other houses and they seem OK which is why I mention them.

Thanks
John M

    chimney need's to be lined

Gas code require's the chimney to be lined...I would have a licensed inspector come in and do a full inspection just for safety sake...:)

    lining a chimney

    John,
Have you thought about venting through the wall. MZ boilers require no traditional chimney, but vent through the wall.
Check out www.mzboiler.com and save $$$ on lining your chimney, not to mention dollars saved on fuel usage.

    What's the chimney?

If it has a tile liner all the way down in good shape, especially if interior to the house, you probably are fine without a liner kit. If there is no tile liner, you need a liner kit. Local codes may say otherwise but the National Flue Gas Code says you should be OK. I assume an atmospheric vent boiler as opposed to induced draft.

MZ has steam boilers? Didn't see them on their web site.

    line the chimney

i would say u have to consider a liner kit because when u change over to the gas boiler while much more eff the stack temp will decrease great enough that it may not heat chimney enough thus creating moisture and acid which will eat away at the chimney in time and u will end up putting in a liner anyway.even if chimney is clay.read the code book it is required because of this reason.u might end up lining the other houses in the future and not by choice.
