Driving to Wetstock?

I found a round trip flight from Newark for $271. I might book it and save the cost of the hotel, but haven't yet.

What are your plans, fellow New Yorkers?

  • Driving from Levittown

I might stay another day and check out the Museums in DC . I was there once and was only able to see part of the Air and Space Museum , it's amazingly big .

    The only problem is...

D.C. is 40 miles away from Wetstock. If I did that, I might want to change hotels.

    A great hotel in DC

    http://www.loewshotels.com/hotels/washington_lenfant/default.asp

The Lowes L'Enfant Plaza is a block from the old Smithsonian building. There's a Metro station in the basement and it's just a few stops to Union Station. You could catch the train from downtown Baltimore to D.C. and be there in not time at all. There's a light rail right near the Wetstock hotel and the hotel offers a free shuttle. This train goes right into downtown Baltimore. Runs every 20 minutes or so.

Another option is to fly Southwest out of Islip. I think it's about $130 roundtrip. You can take the LIRR to Ronkonkoma and catch a cab for the short trip to the airport.

And then there's alwasy the Acela Express right out of Penn to both Baltimore and D.C. Gets you there in three hours, and in style. ;-)

Another good place to visit in DC

the National Building Museum, located in the old Pension building on 401 F Street NW.

    www.nbm.org

They haven't done a Heating exhibit yet- why should air-conditioning be the only climate-control exhibit they've had? I think some of our old Vapor hardware would go over real well!

    There is one room there

that has some wonderful old radiators on display. It's been a few years but I remember that.

  • I am thinking about going to DC

on Sunday , if I'm in any shape to , which I probably will not be . I bought a custom van in 2000 and it only has 17,000 miles on it so far , it's high time to do some travellin' with it . Just went to Mapquest . Should be less than a 4 hour ride if everything flows smooth ( yeah right , getting off the island is traumatizing ) .

With the price of gas and tolls , it's probably cheaper to fly or train down there . Well , I like to do things the difficult way .

    chinatown bus

Or, for $35.00 or less, round trip, the chinatown bus from NYC to either Washington DC or the Baltimore Travel Plaza.

    That sounds good.

Is the Baltimore Travel Plaza near the airport?

    It's north of the city

on 95. The airport is south of the city.

Here's a link to the bus:

    http://www.ivymedia.com/bostondeluxe/newyork_baltimore_dc/newyork__baltimore_dc/index.html

The travel plaza has a bus terminal and you can catch a bus from there to downtown (or possibly the airport). If you find yourself downtown, you can get the light rail to the airport and then the hotel shuttle from the light rail station.

Here's a link to the travel plaza:

Or you can take the Vespa!

    AMTRAK...

Go to www.amtrak.com or call 1 800 USARAIL. Your destination is BWI station (not Baltimore), and there are lots of trains that stop there. Anyone living along the Northeast Corridor can get there by train. Many originate in Boston, pass through New Haven & Hartford, New York Penn Station, Newark & Trenton NJ, Philly, then BWI. Even more originate in NY. Coach, Business Class and First Class are all available. The Acela trains are cool, but more expensive than the regular trains.

    Ask a Baltimorean

    Wallies:

You can catch the Amtrack or Marc commuter train from BWI, just a short trip from the hotel! It's about 30 minutes max from BWI to Union Station. From there take the Metro to get around DC.

You could also visit the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Lots to do and see, and great seafood!

    or

another address, and click on the "round trip" if you are interested, is www.2000coach.com/dcnewyork.html
and read the part about requesting the stop at the travel plaza. also, if there is an option to board the bus at a midtown location near the main metro bus terminal, take it, there are more seats available.
(anyone w/ college students in boston, these bus trips are $10 to boston, new buses, often show newer movies enroute. )

Baltimore also has a public transit website with their city bus routes.

    I like the Acela idea.

It seems like the Acela originates in Penn Station and can get me there at 9:30 am or so.

At night I can catch the 10:50 and be home around 2:00 am.

The only thing I need to know, which is easy enough to find out, I'm sure, is how far the train stop is to BWI Holiday Inn.

How does the Burnham thing tie in to the day?

    The Holiday Inn

is an easy cab ride from the train station in Baltimore.

The Burnham bus trip is on Friday, April 16, not on Saturday. You still up for that?

    There are two AMTRAK stops...

for Baltimore. Downtown Baltimore is the first stop(southbound) and Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) is the next one. They are 13 minutes apart. Northbound its just the opposite. The Holiday Inn said they had a shuttle, or you could take a taxi from BWI. Dan, could you re-post the time schedule for the Burnham trip & Wetstock itself? Thanks!

Sure, here's the Wetstock/Burnham bus trip schedule

Wetstock first. Officially, 9 to 5 on Saturday the 17th. If you get there earlier than 9 AM, c'mon in and we'll put you to work. After 5 PM, many of us will be wandering up to the Inner Harbor to make memories.

The Burnham trip is on Friday, the 16th. Those who are coming will meet in the Holiday Inn BWI lobby for a 7:45 AM departure to Lancaster. We'll arrive at Burnham at around 10 AM. We'll be done with the plant tour by 12:30 and then we'll get back on the bus and head for Smoketown, where we will eat ourselves into comas at the famous Good N Plenty, courtesy of our friends at Burnham. Then, it's back on the bus for an on-time arrival back at the HI/BWI at 4 PM. Wash up and I'll meet you in the bar.

    Ken's buying the Guinness!

  • I'm going to try the train too

Looks like I'm not going to have any time for DC on Sunday . I'm going to check the schedules now . Since check-in to the hotel is later on , will there be any place to store some luggage while we go to Burnham ?

    They're gone now

and the lady I talked to said they had never had a heating exhibit. The ones you saw may have been left over from when the building was gutted- it originally had steam heat. Obviously there were no Wetheads on the planning committee!

    Sad.

They were upstairs in their own little room. They had a round radiator and another that was just huge. Lots of info from the Dead Men on the walls. Sad that she doesn't remember.

    Annapolis

I'm going a day early. If anyone wants to tag along, I have an invite from Dr. Don (close friend and professor of history at the academy) to see the base/college/campus/navy.

I'm driving down either Wednesday night or Thursday early. Hell, it's only a 2 hour run - maybe 3 with traffic.

We're comin' from Exit 135, Garden State Parkway.

    Zooming in at 9pm Thursday

I will check the bar when I get to the hotel for the nite owls. I'm landing at Reagan in DC but should only have carry on so out the door quick. Wondering if I should rent a car or is there easy transit from Reagan to BWI?

I will also be there until Monday morning. Planning on doing the DC tourista thing on Sunday. Thought GW might needs some help with some stuff at the White House.

    See you guys soon.

Thank you all for your useful suggestions. I've decided to take the Acela. I think it sounds like fun.

The next question is: I can only stay over one night. Should I stay over Friday night or Saturday night?

The Burnham trip would require a Thursday night stay-over and I can't see that happening.

    Stay over

Friday night. That way, you won't miss a good part of Saturday.

I took you off the bus. Thanks for the heads-up.

If you want a real treat. Spend a few extra bucks and sit in the first-class car.
