suggested in one of the threads that what this site needs is a "Product Review" area where people can post their experiences with products and systems (both good and bad) for others to consider.
I think this is great idea and the timing is right. For quite a while, I've been watching the On the Job section of the site and I don't think it's lived up to my expectations. It's been there from the first day, and it was also on the old site, but relatively few pros have added to it (although a lot of people read it each day).
I'm going to take these stories and move them to the new Library as soon as that's ready (looks like in a week or so), and I'm going to have Invision modify On the Job so that it's a place where you can review products and systems.
When you submit a review, it will come to me by email. I'll read it over and fix any spelling mistakes before posting it. I'll pass on any review that attempts to flame people or products, so please don't bother sending any of those my way. Being respectfully critical is helpful to everyone; being nasty isn't. You guys know what I mean.
Your review will become a permanent part of the site. It won't fall off as the Wall posts do (although you can get any of those back by using the Search feature).
I'll also ask you to provide your name, location (state/province), company affiliation (if any) and valid email address so that anyone with follow-up questions can ask them of you. I'll post those with your review.
If we all handle this new feature in a mature way I think it will really help a lot of people make decisions, especially the thousands of homeowners who visit this site each day.
Thanks for your continuing support. This is what we're doing with the money from the bricks that many of you are buying. In order to milk the cow, you also have to feed the cow. ;-)
Thanks.

great idea Dan..
especialy the valid email address it is much easier to be obnoxious and critical if no one can reply to you personally.
John0 -
Critical, yes.
Obnoxious need not apply.
I'm hoping that what we'll see will be well-thought-out reviews, good or bad, made by people who are willing to answer follow-up questions. Those will take place in private.
And these reviews, as I said, will be permanent to the site. Sort of makes you want to do the right thing, doesn't it?Retired and loving it.0 -

Would this also allow manufactuers
to respond to information posted about thier products?

No,
but they can use the Wall for that if they'd like. On the Job will be a place for individual opinions. It should build over time to give an overall picture of products and systems. From this, consumers can draw their own opinions, Tim.Retired and loving it.0 -
My opinion. Not that you asked...
I think it's a great idea and I will refer to it often, I'm sure.
I must admit, though, that I wish you would let the posts display as written. I use the internet for all types of product reviews and consider things like the grammar, spelling and sentence structure used by the poster to help determine with which reviewers I might tend to agree.
Call me obnoxious, but if you can't spell "hydronics" you lose the right to comment on the equipment.
It's not fair to the manufacturers...
..and they're always so good to us.

Good point,
and I'll take your advice, John. Less work for me. ;-)Retired and loving it.0 -

You might want to take a look at the tirerack.com website. They have literally thousands of reviews for the tires they sell, and they are categorized by use. Just a thought for a pattern as to how to set it up..... no sense in reinventing the wheel.

Re John's post
Dan,
I do agree that John has a valid point. However you should also be careful not to judge a real pro in the HVAC industry by his proficiency as a typist. I type well, but I do have errors. Therefore I use Word and then copy & paste to this & other sites that I frequent, when I post. In doing so, I can use my spell check in Word to correct any errors in typing or spelling.
Just a Thought,

In what part of the site
is it? Thanks.Retired and loving it.0 -
Good advice.
It's attention to detail, and I think it does affect the way the consumer views the tradesperson, especially if the spelling mistakes show up in a proposal. People begin to wonder what the work is going to look like if the proposal for the work is careless.
First impressions. I think that's the point John was making.Retired and loving it.0 -

Bricks
Dan,
Point well taken , (yours & Johns), about the first impression.
BTW, I saw your post about the bricks.
That was one of my ROUNDTUIT things.
This site is worth its weight in gold.
Thank you for dedicating so much time to it.
I got my ROUNDTUIT, and I just purchased 5 bricks.
Best regards,

If you.....
click search your tire size under "Start Shopping" then click "Go" next to the tire size, you will get a list of all tires available for that size. Toward the right center of the screen you will see "Reviews", Click here.

Not pracical, Gerry,

while you are at it,
we need a way on the wall, to delete truncted or duplicate messages - today, all we can do, is "edit", and empty them, but the msg shell still clutters the tree,
there should also be a "wrap mode display" button, so that when trees get very indented, you can clik on that button and re-wrap the msgs to fit the view
as well as an auto-image button - so that pictures that auto-display with msgs - should only auto-display if you want them to

Thanks, but
this is licensed software that Invision provides (done by others) and it can only do what it does.Retired and loving it.0 -
