saw a sign at the return counter at local home depot that warns the help that an item home depot sold that is no longer carried by them will not be warrenteed where does that leave a diyer who buys a water heater this yr then next yr home depot is carring a differant brand??

That's why manufacturers push their own warranties, among other reasons. If the seller goes out of business, the customer can fall back on the manufacturer's warranty. But it is a two-edged sword. If the seller stays in business, the manufacturer can market and sell directly to the seller's customer. Some compromise, eh?0
