Water Softener/conditioners

I have not checked the results of my towns water tests, so I do not have exact figures, but I believe I have hard water. I don't think I want (or need) to deal with the normal ion exchange water softeners (sodium for calcium). The only problem Im having is the water spot/stains on the faucets etc... (plus the wife commenting on the film left in the tub)
I am skeptical about the magnetic (and electro-magnetic) treatments because I am not sure if they really work. BUT I know they do not claim to remove the calcium/magnesium, which I don't believe I want to do anyway, just stop the build up.
Does anybody have any experience with these? Do they work? Should I install a preventative device for my new boiler? Will this have any benefit to a boiler system?
An alternative to the sodium and magnetic treatments, I have also found this product...

Any comments or suggestions that would help me decide would be helpful.
Thanks

You NEED to know
how hard you water is. Also what else is in the water. High iron for instance will plug your softner, rendering it usless. Only then can you properly select and size equipment.
Keep in mind everyone has a different definition on how hard is too hard. I can live with 5-8 grains but after that it bugs me and my fixtures, truck washing, etc.
Keep in mind the water the town sends you can, and does change. They may have multiple sources. And these too can change as the water table, or run off effects the source. You need to check ocassionally and adjust your equipment accordingly.
Water hardness kits are fairly inexpensive to purchase. This allows you to monitor incoming, as well as the output from your softner.
Generally a closed loop hydronic system is filled but once. So the fill water is only a concern at day one. IF you water is extremely hard, consider purchasing DI or DM (demineralized) water for the hydronic fill. Hard water will coat the HX surfaces and reduce you heating appliance efficiency from day one. DI water is cheap, usually less than 20 cents a gallon. This with a proper cleaning and hydronic treatment is one of the best things you can do for you "hot water' system.
Gather some more info on you water supply and find a local expert to help with treatment options. Be leary of salesman that sell a "one size fits all" softner
Same for radiant heating systems!

ps: I have an auto backwash rust filter, softner, AND magnets on my system, along with a carbon filter at drinking faucets. Just don't jump into the shower with any metallic objects, that magnetic water is powerful:)
